1. He poured good humor into the wineglass
And bustled about offering it to the revelers

The soft breeze had tousled his flowing locks

4. Pleasure streamed over his cheeks’ brooks
So he started fencing his roses with wit

5. He made the friends equal by drinking until
The host grew heady and reason left the sober

6. It settled the minds and gained control
So whispers began in people’s breasts

7. It traveled under night’s cloak, singing,
Making lamps and torches redundant

8. Swords were drawn against it to tame
Manners after the wine’s joy

9. Give souls a cup of monastery coffee
Like the rising sun in the tavern-keeper’s hand

10. Name its price and don’t begrudge it
If its flavor is displayed, fearing poverty

11. Be generous when buying it, for we have seen
The heaviness of cups and lightness of purses

12. Race to the gardens of Eden which have appeared
With flowers of diverse, wondrous species

13. The clouds have dragged their hems over it and dressed it
In the finest garb of flowers

14. The tendrils of its branches grew tipsy and the
Warbling of doves rang with the sweetest melodies

But his forbearance restrained them with a bridle

20. Gentle to creatures, mild with dew
But firm in adversities and harsh

21. His gifts outstripped requests, while he
Was in mourning and people at weddings

22. He instituted charity and holy war, so his days
Were two days: one of visits and one of battle

23. Effort is the foundation of glory on which
Glory is built and nothing else

24. You have set your eyes to lofty goals
Preserving its star from extinction

25. Your efforts have delighted souls
Which were anxious and full of doubts

26. The world prospered through you, and its hatred
Returned to intimacy after its desolation

27. A barrier among people, you have not ceased to be hoped for
Making creatures equal in bounty and consoling

28. The noble-palmed aspire to your attainments
And the lions cower from you in the thickets

29. Good fortune came to you from God, supported
So be eternal, continuing in bounty and cultivation
