1. In my chest are bonds from the days of my beloved
And what stirs them is a glance and a visiting apparition

2. So the apparition, if I sleep one day, excites
And the glance, if I listen one day, allures

3. O you who deny passions, you are no lover
Only a lover knows passions

4. One who has a soul like mine, faint
Or one who has a heart like mine, fluttering

5. Between his ribs resides a beloved
Who makes him incline to his place, and a love speaking

6. If he recalls the night visitors, his lover said
In love, on the day he inclines, a fugitive

7. How can there be inclination from the one I love when
Around my neck are pacts to love and covenants

8. My beloved claimed that my tear is a liar
And Allah knows that my tear is truthful

9. Who can compete with my anguish or my sighs
Both, when remembered, are early starters
