1. The eight branches of glory are the family of Muhammad
They are the pure ones, free of all filth

2. The finest of humanity is that Prophet, for he
Is swift when called, not slow to respond

3. My body thirsts, I hope for relief
From my God, through nearness to him, quenching longing

4. The patience I show has been cracked by the heat in my ribs
And the burning pangs of yearning for him

5. Eight drops of tears, eight portions of his love
So I reap wishes from the gardens of comfort

6. Eighty years plus ten have decrepited me
In them I clung to fraying ropes

7. For twenty years I was drunk on the wine of youth
Oh, what drunkenness that brought my mind, roaming astray!

8. I will not give it up now, even if poison should kill
In it, I would trick death the cheater

9. The finest verses are those I composed and recited
Hearing them, do not think them mere empty prattle

10. Eight and these two make ten, all of them
Beautiful, so reward them quickly, do not hesitate
