1. How much youth my heart held as fire
And warded off from me thorns

2. Softly blowing the fragrance of musk
Spreading the wings of night and day

3. Telling of a delicate gazelle
With dark eyes and fleeing

4. Showing you with steps, her wandering
And with glances, her breaking

5. Drawing near to the heart in love
Though homelands are far

6. Having the newness of virginity
Taking off the garment of protection

7. How many nights have I spent watering
From a potion in which there is a remedy

8. And roses were brought to me fresh
And I plucked narcissus

9. From a cheek, if the full moon saw it
He would hide away

10. On it beauty has composed
Water flowing and fire

11. Until I saw in the necklace of darkness
The string of pearls shining forth

12. And dawn arose in the east
Rising and illuminating

13. Telling of Abul Fadl’s face
When it sees visitors

14. Bestowing a melting glance
And sighs of virgins

15. And cleaving the heap of musk
For the guest with ambergris

16. And making the atmosphere fragrant
With things that give off scent

17. A sea that palms would be shy
Of its open-handedness and generosity

18. You see it and see in overwhelming majesty
A roaring, violent flood

19. Nobler than the honored elite
The protected and forbidden neighbor

20. And better than the king who took
His opinion and consulted

21. Giving with his right hand bounty
And with his left favor

22. How much indeed he remedied
The woes of time

23. And established among the people justice
Encompassing all regions

24. The caliphate he planted, O you who
Bore for people ripe fruits

25. O greatest of creations in righteousness
And most pure carpenter

26. If not for thrift of wealth
You would see him preferring others

27. Otherwise I would not have glimpsed for us
Any look or glimpse

28. He would remain for people an obedient father
And leader restraining

29. And may my Lord add for me
To your lifetime more lifetimes
