1. When the clouds veil my beloved's abode
The morning dew suffices me as company

2. And O lightning of passion, let your flashes light my eyes
When their radiance is denied by the shy clouds

3. Would that your downpour returned profuse as musk
So many vain hopes have I harbored

4. And so many pleasures with you have I shared
Reaching dawn after nights of revelry

5. With fair maidens, rosy cheeks and pliant waists
Intoxicated with wine and coy glances

6. Graceful as gazelles, basking at dawn
In sunlight, as it pierces through the gloaming

7. But night obscures that vision unless
Flashes from within the clouds make it known

8. I glimpse that rosy cheek in a rose’s bloom
Parting its petals like a rending heart

9. Enslaved by passion, now set free
Alas for the captive, liberated from his chains

10. If he reproaches me, I find solace
In the beauty of his angry, pouting face

11. The miserly say I have donned the robe
Of a life of hardship and bitter poverty

12. I braved the blows of fate and calamities
When I retreated to my solid, steep stronghold

13. Where I see greatness as my destination
While the arrows of mishaps fail to reach their mark

14. I left the path for competitiors when
I saw my path was none but yours to take

15. I knew in seeking the support of the Faith
I drew from a deep sea of generosity

16. In one whose ancestry is purest glory
Scion of fame and noble, ancient lineage

17. On darkened earth your green oasis
Returns the red, like rubies in the sand

18. Generous your nature, freely you bestow
From open hands and cheerful, kindly face

19. With giving hands that overflow with bounty
On worthy and unworthy, far and near

20. Peerless in glory and renown most noble
Adorned with glory's mantle and its sword

21. Alone at the pinnacle of high emprise
Your path pursuing lofty, peerless aims

22. Efforts fall short that seek to match your zeal
Though spurred on by hopes of keeping pace with you

23. True to the poets when they sang your praise
And to the supplicants, whichever way they turned

24. Though I was fashioned but an humble soul
Of those who ply the poet's craft, obdurate

25. My gravest fault toward them is to express
Sublime ideas in too plain terms

26. O flower of chivalry, your pardon for neglect
Which spurns the water of spiritual life

27. But by the noble virtues you embody
Purer than gentle wafting fragrant scent

28. Are you not of those, when glorified,
All other glory pales, all honor shrinks?

29. For your defenders weapons are prepared
Like rays whose gleam ignites destructive fires

30. The coward flees in terror from your might
As you bend down your lofty, slender form

31. By them I swear, likened to arrows, honed
Imagined piercing fiery battle's gloom

32. When we transverse the lonely wilderness
We leave behind us but the wind's faint moan

33. Toward me they came, circling the mosque
And by the ancient house they formed their ring

34. Abu Muzaffar, best of God's creations
Sees highest merit in nobility

35. Hasten the advent of this blessed fast
That comes imploring union with its love

36. It says your songs will still be sung
As rustling leaves sound from the bending branch
