1. He recalled the palm trees, their water and lawful livelihood
And their beautiful, permitted neighborhoods

2. The leaves rustled for him, so his heart sang
And lightning in the hills enchanted him

3. Poor soul left whom he loved, with nothing to his name
Just patience, now lamenting the ruins

4. Calling out to Zainab, Malik's daughter
Asking after her, though she brought only sorrow

5. By God, oh cool breeze, come to us
Where are the loved ones? Time to move on

6. If only I could sacrifice myself for the beauties
Bearing their gorgeous beauty

7. And for the lone camel and the she-camel teased
By the north wind in her stance, swaying

8. I kissed her the day we parted and she leaned
Showing me the sweetest honey

9. She wept, raining pearls on narcissus
Watering its cheek with a stream

10. I left her, and left the dearest thing, parted
As nights leave all things in time

11. Why do you blame me? How can you rebuke me?
When I cannot obey blame and rebuke

12. You rebuked one who cannot show patience
And blamed one who cannot hear blame

13. Oh rumbling lightning in the night’s gloom
Dawn and torrential rain

14. Tell the rain clouds to drag the hems of life
Where Muhammad once dragged his cloak’s hem
