1. Others are changed by a flirting girl
And yearn for them wherever they set up camp
١. غيري تغيره الفتاةُ العيطلُ
ويشوقُه الغادون حيث تحملوا
2. While only a cooing dove stirs me
And I am roused by the morning breeze and clouds
٢. وسواي يُشجيه الحَمَامُ إذا شَدى
وتهيجُ لَوْعَته الصَّبَا والشمأل
3. But I weep for a time now past
With my two tear ducts so tears just flow
٣. لكنني أبكي على زمنٍ مضَى
بالرُّقمتَينُ فدمعُ عين يَهْمُلُ
4. The days when youth was in full bloom
United with she who I love, destiny facing me
٤. أيامَ ما كان الشبابُ غُرانقاً
بوِصَالِ مَنْ أهوى وسُعدى مُقْبِلُ
5. I fell short of enjoying youth though it was mine
With carefree rambling and gentle reproach
٥. أقصرتُ عن غيّ الشباب وكان لي
فيه الترسّلُ والعِتَابُ المُرْسَلُ
6. How I used to ramble with the morning breeze like the breeze
And the brilliant morning star served me the purest wine
٦. ولكم جَريتُ مع الصِّبَا جريَ الصَّبَا
وسقاني الصهبَا أحْوَر أكحلُ
7. Most deserving of blame is a poet
Who berates people's stinginess yet is stingy himself
٧. وأحق خلقٍ بالملاَمة شاعِرٌ
يَلحَى على البخلِ الرجالَ ويبخلُ

Alas I have a soul that is chaste and an resolve
٨. هَيهات لي نفس تعف وهِمَّةٌ
مِنْ دونِها يدنو السماكُ الأعزلُ
9. Without which even the gaunt come begging
I praise the generosity of benefactors when given
٩. أُثْنى بفضلِ المنعمين إذا امورٌ
كفر الصنيعَ وَيجزلونَ فاجذل
10. They spurn favors and give generously to the lowly
Oh you who roast the bread and it is
١٠. يا رائحاً أثل الطويق وأنّه
بئس النزول به وبئس النّزّل
11. Miserable to camp there and a miserable camp
Convey to the submitted if you reach a Muslim
١١. أبلغ مُسلَّمَ إنْ بلغت مسلماً
فالكلبُ ليس بفاعلِ مَا يفعل
12. The dog cannot do what it does
And respond to him with some of his own poetry
١٢. واردْد عليه نزوةً من شِعْرهِ
فالزبلُ في وسطِ المزابل يُجعَلُ
13. For garbage is placed amidst piles of trash
Can I blame people when you, hyena of mischief,
١٣. أتلومُ قوماً كنتَ يا ضَبْعُ الفَلا
بالأمس بين بيوتهم تتظلل
14. Were yesterday prowling between their homes
They sang to you when your palms did not know bounty
١٤. أغنوك إذ لم تدر كفُّك مَا الغنى
وسقوكَ إذا لاَمَاء قومك شلْشَل
15. And gave you water when your people's water bags dripped
They saw you in rags worth a single coin
١٥. ورأوك في حوكٍ يُسَاوي درهماً
فكسوكُ تخطر في النسيج وترفل
16. So they clothed you as you strutted in fabric and luxury
You slandered praise of Al-Suhayli though
١٦. وَقَدَحتَ في مَدْحِ السهيلي الذي
أذيالُه مِن هَام قومك أطولُ
17. His train is longer than the necks of your people
You claimed that the wing is bigger than a palm
١٧. وزعمت أنّ الجِنْحَ أكبرُ جفنةً
من حاتمٍ ومن السموأل بهدل
18. Than Hatem and Al-Samawal's shed
By God, you only likened it to rubbish
١٨. والله ما كالجبح أن شبّهْتَهَ
إلاَّ مُحيَّاً ابنُ العليفِ الأرذل
19. Like the smelly son of Al-Aleef the vilest of plebs
I think Bahdal guided his she-camel
١٩. وأظنُ بَهْدَل كان قوِّمَ أيْره
وسطَ الطَريق ورْأس أمّك أسفلُ
20. In the middle of the road with your mother's head below
Had I been there in the morning
٢٠. لو كنت حاضرها غداه
يا بن العليف لرض فاك الجندل
21. O son of Al-Aleef, your army would have been crushed
And upon your homes and your morning would be
٢١. ولبيتتك وصبحتك صواعق
مني تحلُّ إذا حللت وترحَلُ
22. Lightning bolts from me when they come down and move on
But you were absent and the expanse of your land contains women
٢٢. لكِنْ خلوتَ وحَشو أرضك نسوةٌ
فوَقعت بين بيوتهم تتغزلُ
23. So you fell between their homes flirting
And when nobles leave a land
٢٣. وإذا الأجادلُ غُيّبَتْ عَنْ بَلْدةٍ
وقف الغرابُ بها يصيح ويَحْجلُ
24. The raven stays there crying and wailing
And when a donkey is in a people's land who have seen
٢٤. وإذا الحِمَارُ بارضِ قومٍ لم يَروا
خيلاً بها قالوا أغر محجّلُ
25. No horses there, they say what a magnificent stallion
Poetry like the hollow of a drum, nothing inside
٢٥. شعر كجوف الطبل ما في جوفه
شيء ولكن للمسامع يشغل
26. Yet it occupies the hearing
By God, they did not give you anything for your
٢٦. والله ما أعطوك أنّك مُفلق
في الشعر لكنَّ المواصل يُوصلُ
27. Profuse poetry but singers keep singing
And I was amazed when they said so-and-so is a poet
٢٧. وعجبتُ إذ قالوا فلانٌ شاعر
وتغامزوا فعجبت لم لا تخجلُ
