1. Greetings, O abode with arched door, you are a place
Of my sorrows and wounds

2. No morn passes by you, neither an early visitor
Nor a late night companion

3. And I have not forgotten, though the world parts us
A secret to which my mother ’Ammar entrusted me

4. A lady of Ghawriya who settled in Najd, thus she divided
My innards between Anjad and Ghawar

5. A fire is not lit around her tent at night
Unless I ransom with my soul the kindler of the fire

6. A helpless, serene she-camel, under her a moon
On a sand dune – such is the work of the Creator

7. Musk on her lips, even pure water, even
Soft flowing water and twinkling lightning

8. Her people are people of cattle and feast
Cavalry and every deaf old man is deft

9. If the wind touches a bit of scent from their tents
It chokes with every sweet basil and usefulness

10. Who will convey to me news of ’Ukaz wherever it is pitched
And speak of all the details to me

11. Verily I departed from Dahma in the inviolable territory
Which its protector protects with the fierce lion

12. I came to the one whose visitors are groups
Like pilgrims, so each one returned my visitor

13. With the one who grants the world and scorns the other
Rather, the man free of dishonor

14. I sat with the son of Sa’da in the Khornuq
Rather, I sat with ’Amr ibn Hind, vengeful

15. The son of Milhan, good, and the son of the virtuous
When I called Abu Bakr for his generosity

16. He responded like pouring rain water
He gifted creatures until my tent could not contain

17. He dragged sacrifices until my butcher was fed up
Whenever my camels appeared, I said when they appeared

18. “This is the companion of the Messenger of Allah in the cave”
The son of Dahma revived the days of the Baramika, though they

19. Were gone, so I became as if the people were my in-laws
He gifted me the essence of poems

20. And the sheikh’s essence is higher than my poems
Sa’d ibn Nabit calls him sheikh of his tribe

21. Since he was the protector of the honored nose
He did not go into retreat around Suhba nor Watar

22. But a ferocious lion seeking prey
When I tightened the reins toward him from my country

23. My camels descended upon fertility and meadows
What is between the house of glory and the spring

24. Is my clan, and the trees are my trees
Al-Samau’al the neighbor said: “He is my neighbor”

25. And another said: “He is my neighbor from seeing my fire”
And the son of Dahma exceeded him in his protection

26. So he said: “He is my neighbor from whom my news reached”
So I said: “I mention you in all the world”

27. So he said: “My fang protects it and my claws”
However I try with him, he stops me and overcomes me

28. Can a palm stop the wave of floods?
Your name is not mentioned in any land or town

29. Except it is as if there are thousands of perfume sellers in it
You have not preceded in valor or generosity

30. Rather, you are foremost in every race
One who masters while being of no benefit or harm

31. Then he does not cease to be useless and harmful
Destruction mends him and mending destroys him

32. You have not ceased to be breaker and obliger
You built the glory of the House of Milhan when you

33. Were its protector, rising above every quantity
Abu Muhammad, rather, Othman does not cease

34. To water your meadows with repeated rains
I am to you as Salman was to Ahmad

35. Pure is his affection without turbidity
Even if I praised you with the Quran then it comes

36. To the cousin of your uncle, sign after sign
And Gabriel used to bring verses composed in your homes

37. Out of love for the chosen Prophet
So may God increase your life as long as the moon orbits

38. And branches sway with birds upon them
