1. Do not ask me tomorrow, O Na'man, what ails me,
And show me mercy, for my state is not your state.

2. I am intoxicated while your heart is awake,
My liver is bound while your heart is free.

3. You blamed me for love, but had you tasted
What I have tasted of it, you would wander like me.

4. Ask me by God how much I have wept over them,
Burning hot coals in my chest and sleeplessness.

5. Whenever I try to return to reason
The verdant meadow reawakens my passion.

6. I recall the best pasture of Muhammad
Where one enjoys and drinks fresh water.

7. Spaces I would sacrifice for those spaces,
And shade I would sacrifice for that shade.

8. My Yemeni confidante, if life
Ever hurts me, says “What ails you, my friend?”

9. He surpassed the heights, the most eloquent of sons,
The pillar and support of all.

10. From Abu Bakr he gained leadership
And from Abdullah, he was his peer.

11. From Bilal ibn Rabah he inherited glory
Who else is like Bilal ibn Rabah?
