1. The valleys have led you, O Talool, to happiness,
And every smooth, flowing stream has granted you gifts.

2. If the people of the valleys have betrayed their word to you,
Then my promise and loyalty have not betrayed our love.

3. And if you’ve been absent from my eyes, though once their light,
In my heart you remain, where darkness resides.

4. So where are you settled in the valleys, my joy and its people?
And me, urging the riding beasts away.

5. And if after me you fall into a lengthy slumber,
My eyes are deprived of sweet sleep.

6. And who will visit me in apparition, his shape,
At my encampment, or upon my pillow?

7. By my life, in you I've made enemies of friends
And befriended, in my love for you, enemies.

8. I'm not one to deny love its substance;
Rather, love leads me, and guidance guides me.

9. They say to me "Passion has corrupted your chastity."
But what good is soundness if it breeds decay?

10. Why drive the stingy to be generous
While Suhayl's magnanimity calls out to the destitute?

11. From Saʿd son of Bint Bin Nahshal I have
A steed that surpasses all other steeds in speed.

12. The meadows of Abi Uthman are the sweetest springs,
And the plains of Abi Uthman are the most verdant meadows.

13. Indeed, the generous adviser Al-Kāfil
Provides the world its fortune through presence and absence

14. Is he not the one who restored Al-ʿAkk's pride
And humbled all who envied it?

15. He took on alone the burdens of the tribes
And fortified the walls of the living with firmness.

16. He raised the pillar of the house from there, though no house
Could be raised without a pillar.

17. A man who does not stint in providing for a guest
When men's hands lag in provisions -

18. His practiced spear returns the stampeding horses
Till you'd think they stampeded without a herder.

19. He accepts no deed but honorable
And mounts no terror but boldly.

20. He frequented Al-Suhayli's lofty plains; receive him there
With whatever bounty you have, and steeds.

21. Where the reddened swords surround their like,
And the brownish blades their counterparts.

22. Where delegations of praise encompass bounty,
All those departing and arriving.

23. I see more radiant than ʿAdnān's progeny
Are the lands he inhabits, kissed by every land's inhabitants.

24. He safeguards kin, is gentle despite injury,
Renewing the acts of affection that have passed.

25. You remain for us - no, you are preserved from harm -
And live on, a pillar of glory without crumbling.

26. You still are - no, you still are - atop ranks,
Master of hands: open, generous.

27. So you are my springtime, not the spring that has vanished,
And you are my wish, not the gazelle of my wishes.
