1. Had there been no grief in me, no pain would have
Cut up my liver, no tents or litters of howdahs.

2. To God I complain of my solitude whenever I see
The slanderers' eyes have stabbed my heart with what pickaxes have not stabbed.

3. They wrong me, though my beauty decides in my favor.
But what's an enemy's case when the judge is his foe?

4. Once we were grains in the sands during days
When life was ripening and our tribe at peace.

5. Now if she has broken her vow and abandoned me
She returns as though her nights of union were a dream.

6. Except for her battered veil, she is bending branches,
Hertent pole fixed, my heart her ailment and anxiety.

7. On her rear is heaviness, in her limbs languor,
Kohl in her eyes, henna on her hands.

8. Coolth in her mouth, love in her embrace,
A blow in her spittle, in her taste a delight.

9. My love for the lithe ones is not for their eyes'
Sake, nor for passion I discovered in myself.

10. I yearn for a folk whose loss I've regretted,
My saliva healing their parted lips.

11. I love them, though they killed me without bloodshed.
But how can a lover be killed who has no blood?

12. I'm absorbed in them - the lover's soul is
Like God's Caliph enraptured with benevolence.

13. This Imam, the Mahdi of mankind - by God,
None but he gives guidance by which nations prosper.

14. A full moon lighting the visage - he's radiant,
A sea flooding armies - he's overflowing.

15. A rain whose only description is freshness,
A lion whose trait is nothing but courage.

16. The risen moon can veil itself, but no veil for
Ahmad son of God's Messenger shall obscure him.

17. The roaring lion can suppress him not, no suppression
For Ahmad son of the Prophet shall diminish him.

18. Thanks be to God! - the time has dawned that lights
The visage of right guidance, removing darkness and gloom.

19. This Prince, Commander of the Faithful - even if
Pulpits dance no blame there can be.

20. This Imam, this unsheathed sword, this lion
Of courage - when ambitions lose hope.

21. In him the Arabs gained supremacy, his state
Triumphant, though it abased the non-Arabs.

22. The steeds of Syria and Yemen rallied to him
As steeds thrust through the unyielding ranks of Turks.

23. An army fearful, litters extremely sedulous
Before which Mount Sinai's slopes might retreat.

24. Horsemen who claimed to be invincible -
The Caliph tore, rendering void their vaunts.

25. The Comander of the Faithful's hands defeat kings
However they attack and resist being subdued.

26. My Master, this is the time you've become unique -
Peaks are beneath you, you've no peer.

27. East and West yearn for you, pilgrim and settler
Alike desire to behold you, Mosque and Shrine.

28. Without you, in Baghdad the Abbasids
Would have no pact however they divide it.

29. They know the secret is through you, though they
Deceived you - but not as they presumed.

30. This is your time whether theirs be long or short,
This your moment whether they conceal or confess.

31. Supreme command was no usurpation of yours -
You are the right in it, while they are wrong.

32. Haydar did not disappear with you as substitute -
Through you he takes vengeance on this latter rabble.

33. You are his son, of similar repute, and from
That cloud these rains poured down in streams.

34. Do not invalidate a pact you've concluded, and
However often you invalidate, your invalidation is not bound.

35. Though they fall short, or betray, or act sinfully,
You treat them with utmost favor, and obligate them

36. To a covenant, magnifying them in glory, however great they become.
Enough if they're inadequate, faithful if they betray,

37. Righteous if they're wicked, forgiving if they're sinful.
You scattered them to bits whenever they waged war, to the extent

38. That had they sought peace, by your creed they'd have found it.
You made Syria morn and they shunned its flanks

39. Deaf, mute - neither deaf nor muted among them.
They supposed they'd rejoice in a haven and fled

40. From haven with a humiliation no long life can forget.
Space was too narrow so the city almost

41. Folded over them in terror.
You hemmed their rear with lands so they languished

42. Until speech itself was struck dumb before them.
No blame if they flee, no sin,

43. The lion only roars to scatter the flocks.
You're the essence of the Caliphate - O son of munificence and fair shares!

44. What share is yours by partition, O son of feats and partitions!
You seas have flooded but their billows are only

45. Freshness, purpleness, and camomile.
In every friend's land clouds raining generosity,

46. In every enemy's mouth a hurricane of calamity.
Victory and opening are tied to this and that -

47. O son of steeds! You are the standard and the banner.
These glories are no borrowing or stringing.

48. The owner of glories borrows not, nothing.
Your Lord gave you what you rightly deserve,

49. So grace us with long days, all bounty.
Make the most of a state purely Arab, clothed

50. In glories with which ennui cannot make acquaintance.
This time is yours, whether of life or lives,

51. Revelation your inheritance, neither loan nor bounty.
I've praised you, but for the House of Haydar

52. My ode would not have spoken a single verse.
I've come to you from the most distant land -

53. After God it's by your rope I've clung.
By God I swear - I'm not a man whose sincerity

54. In praising you and this oath are pretense.
I've chosen not to visit due to reasons

55. That haven't escaped you, and hopes completely forbidden.
Rather, how I've wished to reach your noble court, even

56. If on my head I had to walk when my feet could not go on.
After your plain I've no resort but you -

57. O Son of Hussein! For the desperate you're the desperate man's resort.
Now that my eyes have looked on you

58. I do not fear tribulations, nor does death come to me.
