1. I reminisce about a thousand sacrifices in `Uqayq, and a dwelling
That lightning illuminated and aroused longing in it

2. So it spent the night as al-Salim spent it, lying down
Treating anguish from here and from there

3. When its eyes complain of the tyranny of tears
The body complains of the oppression of suspicions

4. And in the valley's curve, on the valley's right
Are tents that soothe me, of tents and a curve

5. With gazelles like the crescent when it glides
The likes of a wand when it bends grace them

6. Dividing night and dawn and frozen darkness
And water—so how hardened and softened a heart can be!

7. A beautiful face whose beauty cannot be attained
And no beauty was created but to beautify

8. I stayed against my will the day her bracelets jingled
And I was not content to stay while she jingled

9. And I held back my eyelids when its waters surged
Alas! Tears have become its habit

10. My friend, has the date palm's companion returned?
So pardon the scattered love that afflicts me

11. I am the son of ryhmes and meters, and fruit
Of the branch has never ceased to be plucked when ripe

12. I left the people of al-Ghor what sustains them
And did not approve whoever scrimps on livelihood

13. I have not ceased praising kings and composing poetry of character
So I am not content unless it is a star my abode

14. I do not aim for the stingy, nor was I
To clothe my praise in other than the finest raiment

15. In time of dearth, from the head of a shaykh
Of handsome bearing, chest, stature, and refinement

16. The generous hands of Rashid bin Muzaffar bin Mas`ud
Suffice every seeker of livelihood

17. He gifted me from the swords of al-Din a downpour
Of blessings, and the best downpours make the land prosperous

18. I sought it from the land of my starving people
And so returned as if from it I had found a mine
