1. The homes of my people were filled with knowledge,
While the people of Zaroud were blind.
١. أدِيَارَ أميّمة بالعَلمِ
وإلى سكانِ زَرُود عمى
2. And the bucket drew for you bitter water,
While destiny was cruel to you.
٢. وسقاك الدلو مرزّمةً
والسِّماكُ بواكفه الدِّيم
3. For your sake my body was clothed,
For your sake I was cured of illness.
٣. فلكم قد كسوت ضبْني جسدي
ولكم قد شفيت من السقم
4. For your sake I made a vow
To be kind to the innocent and the oppressed.
٤. وَلكم قد عهدتُك مُرتبعاً
للحسانِ العقايل من جُشم
5. A hut, a shack, veiled with shrubs,
Secluded and obscured from view.
٥. رَبَّ خُرْعُبةٍ ومُثْقَّبَة
ومُحَجَّبة بالظُبا الخُذُم
6. Ruined and tattered,
Its door askew.
٦. وخِدَلّجَةٌ ومُدَمْلجَةٍ
ومُفلّجةِ الأشْنَبِ الشبم
7. Confused, plundered, Arabian, mixed,
Packed together, straight like a stick.
٧. خُلِبٌ سُلْبٌ تُرَبٌ عُرُبٌ
كثبٌ قضُبٌ شهبٌ الظُلم
8. Poetry like magic, magical indeed,
Treacherous, untrue to oaths and covenants.
٨. شعر نفر سِحرٌ سحرٌ
غُدُرٌ بالعهدِ وبالذمم
9. Drowsy, sleepy, miserable, depressed,
A sun that does not shine on the oppressed.
٩. هْيسٌ مُيسٌ لُعسٌ نُعْسٌ
شُمُسٌ لا يَلِينُ لمهتضم
10. Cooing like doves enjoying bounty.
If you could see the one who came out to face us,
١٠. بُهُجٌ بَلجٌ دعجق شيحٌ غُنجٌ
كالحمائم في النِّعم
11. You would see a hero who humbles every tyrant.
They crept, crawled, stood like sticks,
١١. لو ترى يمنى أذ بَرَزْن لنا
لرايت فتىً تَعْسُ كلّ كمّى
12. Showed wonder and amazement. I awoke and regretted.
They ruled, unravelled, ripped apart,
١٢. رَجْرَجُوا كُثْبِاً سَلّوا قُضُباً
اظهروا عَجَبَا صِحْتُ واندمي
13. Violating the sanctity of the holy months.
They lingered around Safa, then rushed to desecrate it.
١٣. مَلكوا أفكوا فَتَكوا
هَتَكوا حرمة الأشهر الحرم
14. And leaned against it, and placed their mouths on it.
O pure one, it passes away,
١٤. وظللت حَولَ الصفا اذهموا لثم
وا جانِبَاه ووضعت هناك فمي
15. My affliction is great, my fortune small.
My will betrayed me, alas my determination faded.
١٥. يا عذولُ تقولُ يزولُ
نحول ضنى أعظمي الرِّمَمِ
16. They burned my liver, violated my sanctuary.
I was on pilgrimage, seeking forgiveness,
١٦. خانني جَلَدي آه وَاكمدي
أحرقوا كبدي ضيعوا حُرمي
17. Only to see my feet covered in my own blood.
O daughter of Wasa, is there no relief
١٧. كان حَجِيّ أطلبُ مغفرةً
وأرى قدمي قد أراق دمي
18. For the free man from such pain?
You are the sister of the antelope, pure of sin,
١٨. يا ابنة الوسى أما فرج
للحرّ يرتاح من الألم
19. And the star Suhail, brother of generosity.
Chief of Arabs, giver of gold,
١٩. أنت أخت الظبي بلا حرج
وسهيل الشيخ أخو الكرم
20. Of pure lineage, dispeller of worries.
His face is a moon, his palm a rain,
٢٠. سيد العرب واهبُ الذَهبِ
طاهرُ الحسب كاشف الغُمم
21. Well known, not one to conceal.
A lion in the saddle, with spirited steeds
٢١. وجْهُهُ قمرٌ كَفُّهُ مَطَرٌ
وهو مشْتَهرُ غيرُ منكتم
22. That he hurries faster than lightning.
So much care, authority, prosperity,
٢٢. أسْدٌ في الطِرادِيشِنُّ الجياد
ويعجلهُنّ عن اللُّجُم
23. With waves of generosity ever streaming.
He benefits, returns, prevails,
٢٣. كَمْ هَمَا وسَما ونَمَا
وطما موجُ تياره العرِم
24. Supports, gives generously to all people.
The custom of the Son of Waleed is to protect travellers
٢٤. وأفاد وعاد وساد
وشاد وجاد على الأمم
25. And bring close those far away, like a merciful kinsman.
O Abu Amr, here are precious pearls
٢٥. عادةُ ابن الوليد يجير الطريق
ويدني البعيد كذي الرَّحِم
26. Better scattered, a scattering with order.
You remained for us, were loyal and lived on,
٢٦. يا أبا عَمْرُ هاك من دررٍ
خيرُ منتثرِ نثرُ منتظمِ
27. Sprinkled and lasting, an excellent brother.
٢٧. فبقيت لنا ووفيت وعشت
وُرُشتَ وُدُمتَ أخا نَعَمِ
