1. I do not heed the words of the slanderer
They have no love for the names of my friend

2. They are but rumors in fiction
They are but fiction in rumors

3. It was said, "What do you love in her eyelids?"
I said, "Kohl, even if she doesn't apply kohl"

4. It was said, "Then look at her mouth in her hair"
I said, "That darkness above the sickle blade"

5. She granted me refuge when she saw me afflicted
Where is one granted refuge from one afflicted?

6. Whenever old age told her, "Get up!"
Her buttocks said, "No, no, don't do it!"

7. Whenever beauty told her, "Be tolerant!"
Extravagance said to her, "Be stingy!"

8. And with Nu'man, whenever she passed him
The fragrance of musk spread, the fragrance of a wrap

9. And on the day of Dijjn she leaned over
And gave me a goblet of wine in chains

10. She arched her eyebrows sideways for me
And pelted me, striking my demise

11. Oh what is with me! Oh what do I have
As they carried her upon that litter!

12. No slain by beauty but a living Amr
And passion is his, poetry is mine

13. And if the country grows too small for my saddlebags
To Badr ibn Bakr ibn Ali I go

14. And to Muzaffar's meadows, most verdent
And to that tender springtime

15. How can I not praise, O people of praise
One named after the Prophet, the messenger?

16. My Waili people, their tribe
Dyed the spears' necks green, now faded

17. He was a Rabi'i when Kisra of Persia
Leveled the earth with a hundred thousand armies

18. So the Bani Shayban met him
Riding every swift mare

19. Al-Mujair daughter of Nu'man
The worst of him while he was full of rage

20. Oh Ibn Bakr, oh namesake of the Chosen One
Oh groom of horses, full moon of gatherings

21. Who equals you and who is your peer? None!
Silver ingots are not like necklaces

22. You took the plunge from Qurtub
Until you reached Aden, a difficult plunge

23. You have never ceased, always smiling
To conquer each closed mouth
