1. My friends who complain, when will the flowers return
And that clear spring, when will it have flowers?

2. So answer my confusion about Layla’s dwellings
When will the stranger know when he’ll return?

3. Visit her lands, for in my heart
Is a cool breeze from her zephyr

4. My complaining friends, have mercy on me
For my heart is enslaved by love for Layla

5. Repeat to me, speak not but of Layla
I implore you, repeat, repeat her name

6. I passed by the remains of Layla’s encampment
My anguish drew forth tears that poured

7. I woke the hills but they did not love me
How could they answer me in their stony silence?

8. Layla grew distant and our love grew apart
As did our promises in time past

9. May God protect the days of Layla’s company
And not let our separation and discord persist

10. How sweet is her love within my heart
Though she is miserly in all I desire

11. The pen of destiny wrote Layla’s name
And made my life pleasant at its mention

12. So why blame me for loving Layla?
My heart sheds its tears and is paralyzed

13. If a lad is slain by Layla’s eyelids
And dies on his sickbed, he is a martyr

14. If a lad passes through Layla’s lands
And kisses where she trod, he is blessed

15. Yes, by God, time and love for Layla
Are ever new, not made old by days

16. I stood one evening in Layla’s lands
And slept while my tears flowed ceaselessly

17. The passions sang to me in the thickets
Songs for which they had melody

18. May God protect the days, for time has tested me
With imperfect patience and ever-growing love

19. It lends success and lends greater favor
Bestows a gift and for it has envy

20. Time does not value in the least
The clouds of his generosity, honor and grace

21. We touched the tomb of our master Al-Nahari
And hopes glistened white from what was black

22. The majesty of the sovereign, and the sanctity of devotion
Nurtured in the countryside and sought by pilgrims

23. So yearn, o souls, for that blessed place
Where wrongs are absolved on that blessed ground

24. On that plain blessings are revealed
And felicity shines on all quarters

25. From the Abode of Peace blows a breeze for him
And from the Light of Majesty he has a pillar

26. In it is generosity that enriches and suffices
No goods or coins needed there

27. With a King who diminishes all other kings
And regards armies and soldiers as nothing

28. He appointed things to what He desires
Without need for water or servants

29. A gallant who planted virtues and harvested them
Merits beyond count or measure

30. Muhammad the eminent, Omar son of Musa
My sturdy pillar, you have supported me

31. The enemy threatens me though I’ve done no wrong
Can he escape the warning if he persists?

32. Shall I be slain for small children
Whose father is exiled from his family?

33. Eid passes with children playing
While they have no Eid joy with children

34. Where are the noble morals, o you
Who delighted existence by your gracious face?

35. For there are motives that stirred my love
And terrors that would make a child turn grey

36. My body isn’t stone against disasters
Nor is my heart iron against tribulations

37. So be the hand of my aid and the side of my honor
If an obstinate tyrant treats me unjustly

38. And say to those who have transgressed
“You are far like the people of Thamud!”

39. No number or supply will protect them
Nor citadel or lofty palace

40. You are the one I ask for help in every adversity
What time brings and then brings again

41. Your sword in disasters does not fail
And your arrow flows like blood from a vein

42. If your servant calls you one day
From afar, say the distant has drawn near

43. Protect me today and those after me
And include us tomorrow in eternity with You

44. The religion of Islam remains as a light
Illuminating the confused and the armies

45. And life to a land that contains you like rain
With thunder resounding on all quarters

46. And may He of Majesty bless the Prophet
By whom praises flow copiously
