1. The martyr's eyes are waters pouring down
If but a stream from your spring could avail

2. If tears cannot requite him on that fateful morn
Who then can requite after that true friend?

14. Blind death's arrows strike the innocent
Shooting from behind ignorance's veils

15. And death can be obscured by a gentle breeze
Or the nectar of a drink that slakes thirst

16. Overcoming even one content in refuge
On high or in the tumult of the flooded

17. It robs the loved one of her cloak after removing her veil
Can one live in this world without a cloak or veil?

18. He lived carrying his soul in his palms
Never saying "enough" in the heat of struggle

19. He faced disaster with a shining name
While fate raged and calamities came flooding

20. Death bares its hanging ropes
To the grimy faces and torn limbs

21. Among raging winds it roars like them
Seething in rage and bellowing threats

22. Yearning for Egypt's independence, as yearned
The eye of a lover for the light of dawn

23. Never fearing imprisonment, captivity, deterrence
Killing, or tremors caused by terror

24. If disasters overwhelmed him horribly
They met only disdain and indifference from him

25. The causes of death were too weak for him
So betrayed him traitorously with easy death

26. The death of the virtuous whites on their steeds
Not on a deathbed under coverings

27. Many times Ibn Alwalid wished for death
Among the swords on the battlefield

28. The bold pillar of his country is gone
Succor for the desperate and sanctuary for refugees

29. A nature like the clouds' rain, pure
And an inner self like pearls inside oyster shells

30. A smile at adversities as if it were
The radiant face of a meadow renewed

31. The heavens' people's purity surrounds him
As God of Heaven guards him with might and chastity

32. And integrity that he led the world to
Without any pretense or falsity from it

33. A life that contained the world but owned only
Tent poles like dry, leafless trees

34. And if one fears greed in wealth
Let him be content with sufficient life

35. Open was the way to thousands and more
Without discomfort or hardship

36. However much those who opposed him speak
He was uniquely noble, without peer

37. A will that did not accept difficulty
No path obscure to an obscure path

38. When he wanted, all things were his tools
And when he shot, woe to his targets!

39. In the darkness of tribulations, his insight shone
Like pure starlight in the blackest night

40. Feared yet gentle, when firmness was needed
Justice with deterrence or use of force

41. If you sought truth from him you found
Easy grace and humility in him

42. Memories of him are like the scent of meadows
Comforting souls and soothing aspirations

43. The noble youth possesses only
What his character traits contain

44. Nothing else enhanced his honorable dignity
Even were he of ancestors from Mudar's line

45. We lived following ancestors all our lives
Until we were bored of following ancestors!

46. The genius - his life is his own making
Not the making of names and attributes

47. It's enough that he studied times' lessons
And was guided by the wisdom of successors

48. They blamed his silence though it is a virtue
Prattle is the mount of foolish excess

49. The silence of heroes and their brooding gaze
Are momentous speeches without battle cries

50. A youth's words come from his heart or mind
So if your inner self permits, speak without haste

51. It's enough for one who gave free rein to his tongue
To curb it with "Qaf" and other deterrents

52. He engaged in politics with passions full
For Egypt, ending injustice and transgression

53. Never, with his lofty aspirations fettered
Showing fear of hazards on that road

54. He marched on and the youth followed as the trains
Of meteors followed in the dust of a comet

55. He called insistently for the British to leave
Fulfilling his promise and his pact

56. And called in the Nile Valley undivided
For Sudan and Egypt like the shores of one sea

57. O day of America! How many times have you wept
Frustrated by their ban, and the experts' dissembling!

58. A cry never before unleashed by a hero
In the face of gentlemen's leagues

59. A voice that shook the ether with its roar
How much roaring has shaken Egypt's pillars!

60. In every ear adorned by it is a glory -
How beautiful are ears adorned with glories!

61. The arrogant crowd listened and bowed down
What a gulf between listening and fairness!

62. They heard an ingenious, eloquent speech
Neither extravagant nor extreme in truth

63. A warrior's decisive logic
On a day of battle and a day of culture

64. Candor that dazzled his men's eyes
As light appears without veils

65. They pronounced the eulogy but I said: My tears'
Flood and the grieving man's laments are poems

66. Whose golden, brilliant letters and words
None in the poetry market could falsify

67. Mahmoud the Mujahid has met his Lord
In the Paradise of bliss and kindness

68. Sleep in peace, for saplings and meadows
Are adorned with the finest soil and fruits

69. And descend to your dear friend's abode; you will find
Whatever you wish of love and nobility

70. A martyr's grave is serenity and life
The extended shade of fragrant trees

71. One whose elegy eternal glory inscribed
Did not die, though goodbyes can be bitter

72. You are greeted by the most precious eyes with rain
And the tenderest gentle welcome
