1. The tears shed for you made the valleys flow,
O flower swept away by misfortune!

2. What did life do to make you spurn it,
And cast on you such a gloomy look?

3. You threw yourself off a steep precipice,
Too daunting for the bold to stand nearby.

4. The fierce lion did not fear ruin
When able to overcome it, the gentle doe did.

5. The rocks in the sandy valley crushed you,
And the abyss cast you into the air.

6. You fell dead, the earth did not spread out carpets for you,
Nor cover you with a shroud.

7. You passed away with no kin to protect you,
No hand to console, no sympathy or leaning down.

8. So Sirt’s gazelles wept for you,
as did its mountain goats and singing valleys.

9. The leaves whispered your elegy and fell down,
Leaf after leaf, in succession.

10. Those of your youth grieved for you suddenly,
Before enjoying you or your generosity.

11. The world was too narrow for how it loved you,
No land or time could accommodate you.

12. You looked away from all faces,
Yet in front of you was only darkness.

13. So you spurned the world and its flowers for one
Who found pride in misery and was generous in destitution.

14. Death came to you as a suitor and you accepted him
As a husband, though your dowry, bride, was blood.

15. Your dowry, o bride, was agony
That melted the innards in its fire.

16. It was a tragedy for you, o bride, and an affliction
That befell your family and relatives.

17. I cannot condone your demise, though it was
Unavoidable, it remains a heinous slip.

18. I cannot relish your fall, even if
It protected you from all misfortunes.

19. In every disaster, every monotheist
Has hope that it will be uncovered and removed.

20. Hardship for one whose faith is firm
Becomes easy, and adversity becomes bounty.

21. What did you gain? Did its affection fail you,
And a father whose hand was gentle?

22. Bearing adversity painfully from you,
And saddened by your misery.

23. They both grieved for you and were saddened
As you left the gatherings desolate.

24. I think you made a mistake in killing yourself,
It is a shameful sin and foolish thought.

25. Your suicide was not a single tragedy,
But repeated tragedies.

26. Problems are not solved by an incident
That adds misery upon misery.

27. I stand over you as a poet, eulogizing you,
If this elegy benefits you.

28. Regretful, and regret is a lament,
Reproachful, and reproach is weeping.

29. I presented your case to suspicions and their tyranny,
For suspicions are blind mounts.

30. I assumed the best about your character from hearsay,
And perhaps it is innocent of what is said.

31. Your soul bore a noble affliction,
Perhaps it sacrificed itself for other souls.

32. Perhaps your tragedy was a mental outburst,
A misstep in the journey, or fainting spell.

33. Or an affliction that burned your reason,
And burnt away your wisdom and intelligence.

34. Hands carried your bier high
As if it were a ship full of tears underneath.

35. It was not a funeral that bid you farewell, but a nation
That gathered and could not be counted.

36. All their hearts melted for you in mercy,
And the Merciful accepts the merciful.

37. Is it a corpse above your bier, or a twin
To your bier’s daughters, or the Gemini constellation?

38. Or a piece of the heart of a beautiful laughing one,
Whose forehead shone radiantly through misfortunes?

39. Do not despair of your Lord’s spirit, He
Forgives major sins and is Beneficent and Giving.

40. May God clothe you in his pardon,
And quench you from his mercies.

41. And when God tests His servants through hardship,
It requires patience, supplication, and prayer from them.

42. Say to the youth who are stubborn in their views,
And provocative in their passion.

43. Who are warned by others’ mistakes,
Their own errors inspire them to do right.

44. The suicide of the despairing is a terrible crime,
Which the cowardly are disgraced by.

45. Your life is a battle whose spoils go
To the resolve of a lion and the will of a stubborn horse.

46. The earth is a market of opposites,
The way of the world is buying and selling in it.

47. Success and failure are its variable offers,
The living take and receive from both.

48. Whoever cannot find hope in it has failed,
Never to be hoped to gain wealth.

49. People are the prey of misfortunes, all of them
Targets for it in the ledger as it shoots arrows.

50. Whoever escapes one tribulation falls into its like,
From afflictions there is no escape to safety.

51. Then God judges and executes His judgement,
On all creatures as He wills and desires.

52. Glorious is He, the realities of His knowledge
Are hidden from us, not grasped by reasoning.

53. None succeeds except the trusting faithful,
No matter how much he is tested by affliction.

54. By holding to the means of God, he gains support,
And by submitting to the judgements of God, acceptance.
