1. A ruined abode forsaken by its people so
Only foxes spend the night bewailing it.
١. عَفا لَفلَفٌ مِن أَهلِهِ فَالمُضَيَّحُ
فَلَيسَ بِهِ إِلّا الثَعالِبُ تَضبَحُ
2. Much firewood of branching twigs was gathered there
By a loving doe until we started visiting her at eve.
٢. وَأُدمٍ كَثيرانِ الصَريمِ تَكَلَّفَت
لِظِبيَة حَتّى زُرنَنا وَهيَ طُلَّحُ
3. She drove them away from the two Sa’ds till there remained
But nestlings of the sons of crippled Grh.
٣. دَفَعنَ مِنَ السَعدَينِ حَتّى تَفاضَلَت
خَناذيذُ مِن أَولادِ أَعوَجَ قُرَّحُ
4. May God water from the rain-clouds of their abode
Honored captives, wherever they passed the night and morn.
٤. سَقى اللَهُ حَيّاً مِن فَزارَةَ دارُهُم
بِسَبَّي كِراماً حَيثُ أَمسوا وَأَصبَحوا
5. By dawn when the tribes of Qain and Khail attacked
They regained their blood-right from the tribe of ‘Abd-Wdd.
٥. هُمُ أَدرَكوا في عَبدِ وُدٍّ دِمائَهُم
غَداةَ بَناتِ القينِ وَالخَيلِ جُنَّحُ
6. As if the warriors seeking blood-vengeance
Were lions attacking them and tearing them to pieces.
٦. كَأَنَّ الرِجالَ الطالِبينَ تَراتِهِم
أُسودٌ عَلى أَلبادِها فَهيَ تَمتَحو
