1. I see the people in Egypt with hearts so divided
Though calamities may unite them as one

2. Each has their own path and purpose
And their own affairs to be done

3. Some extend ropes of hope
While others see despair as fate

4. One sleeps on silver
Another rests on gold's weight

5. One wanders with his papers
Seeking dreams however slight

6. Willing to lose himself in far lands
Even if thorns fill his way

7. The poor desire a loaf of bread
Fleeing in fear through the night

8. Asking for food they say he sins
Describe his poverty, they say he lies

9. Say "Oh Lord, where are the hearts?"
Threats answer and fury arises

10. They say "a poor man insulting faces
With rude words and manner unwise"

11. Things hard for the wise to bear
Leaving the masses to toil and sigh

12. Love has made all souls to want
Yet our rulers know not why

13. Men and women roam together
Now in groups and now apart

14. Traders eye their merchandise
With fiery glances that dart

15. Farmers swear they've destroyed
Horses and books and instrumental art

16. No wheat he has seen harvested
No grain gathered from any part

17. Elders and children advise each other
With cleverness that captures the heart

18. Tighter now bind your stomachs
Dim your eyes, tame your ire and your pride

19. Take as shelter an aspect of patience
When troubles and suffering abide

20. Evil only grows worse if unchecked
Chaos only settles when rectified
