1. Die so you may live, do not wish for a life
That tarnishes souls with a terrible death

2. To lose your soul by clinging to your soul is disgraceful
For a man to lose himself is disgrace

3. The free man risks all for glory
And seeks the highest abode

4. He violates protected lands and sheds the blood of enemies
His protection made him violate

5. The anxious and sleepless finds no rest
Nor wants to return

6. The living knows that the living are protected
If they fear a misfortune befalling

7. The determined never falters at obstacles
Nor can bear to retreat

8. Souls are not disturbed by impassable roads
When he passes and the valley does not echo

9. The worst that misfortunes bring
Is to see his trusting people frightened

10. So he goes on striving, not caring
Whether he fell the opponent or was felled

11. He meets it defiantly, seizing swords by force
And violating shields

12. Ask people, who of them protected a soul?
And weep, free man, as all souls were protected
