1. On hot coals, walk, for it is the path
Trodden by those who came before.

2. They loved what their Lord lit for them,
So they marched into fire and waded through blood.

3. On the coals walk, vie with yourself, and make
Of them a ladder to ascend on high.

4. Let the roads be strewn with flowers around,
And the minds of the resolute turn blind.

5. On the coals walk, attain by your opening
A pinnacle of glory that revives the toiling drudge.

6. May the coolness of time bear his voice
To rouse a people slumbering from the truth.

7. And waken them, the proud resolve
To rebuild what was destroyed.

8. Let the lover of faith step forth, for all merit
Belongs to one who feared the blame of his people and stepped forth.

9. They are the folk who harmed no covenants nor dishonored
Any neighborhood, nor on time's realm trespassed.

10. By your Lord, take them with deterrents and pelt them
With what the caller to God took aim and cast.

11. And say to him who complains of life's flames,
And weeps for Islam's bygone days,

12. Toward tears turn away, if you be not patient,
And what will tears avail if shed or repressed?

13. You vent the soul's cares in the cry
You uttered, so be patient a little, perhaps
