1. They called for Egypt's independence, so we've
come to know the hidden aspects of the matter and the cover lifted.
١. دَعوا اِستِقلالَ مِصرَ فَقَد عَرَفنا
خَفايا الأَمرِ وَاِنكَشَفَ الغِطاءُ
2. They called for your independence, O people, but we
disavow this independence of yours.
٢. دَعوا اِستِقلالَكُم يا قَومُ إِنّا
مِن اِستِقلالِكُم هَذا بَراءُ
3. Take it to the graves and bury it
and say to the president, "long live!"
٣. خُذوهُ إِلى المَقابِرِ فَاِدفُنوهُ
وَقولوا لِلرَئيسِ لَكَ البَقاءُ
4. If there be another scheme, then so be it,
otherwise there remains but discontent and refusal.
٤. فَإن تَكُ خُطَّةً أُخرى فَمَرحى
وَإِلّا فَالتَذَمُّرُ وَالإِباءُ
5. Leave it clamor without good,
for neither hue nor cry avail.
٥. دَعوها ضَجَّةً لا خَيرَ فيها
فَما يُغني الضَجيجُ وَلا العُواءُ
6. Does the zeal of every free man anger you,
provoked by his chivalry and loyalty?
٦. أَتُغضِبُكُم حَمِيَّةُ كُلِّ حُرٍّ
تُهَيِّجُهُ المُروءَةُ وَالوَفاءُ
7. Take away your fools from us, O people,
for patience and propriety have long endured.
٧. خُذوا سُفهاءَكُم يا قَومُ عَنّا
فَقَد طالَ التَحَلُّمُ وَالحَياءُ
8. Shall I turn away from your talk though
the necks of evil refuse? That is your affliction.
٨. أَنُعرِضُ عَن مَقالَتِكُم وَتَأبى
رِقابُ السوءِ ذَلِكُمُ البَلاءُ
9. Are we free men who struggle, or merchants?
Is there in Egypt buying or selling?
٩. أَأَحرارٌ نُجاهِدُ أَم تِجارٌ
وَهَل في مِصرَ بيعٌ أَو شِراءُ
