1. The gloom shuddered at his echoing moan,
And dawn appeared to him with a ghastly face.

2. Laid out on the mountain slopes, wounded,
In war he wraps himself in resolve and is clad in it.

3. On the day of turmoil, his zeal was that of the valiant,
Plunging into the horrors of the hateful fight.

4. He protects truth when it shines forth in the dark,
White flowers under black, churning clouds.

5. He broke through ranks into the enemy lines, venturing
To ignite war when its fires had died down.

6. When death draws near, it does not terrify the resolute one,
Though he fears the words of critics, "Woe, keep away!"

7. Steadfast under the black clouds, as if
He were a boulder battered by the swords.

8. The gardens were set up for him in their shade,
So he hurried to them like a dedicated martyr.

9. The Prophet greeted him and the martyrs of Badr
Gathered around that scene.

10. A barrage from the brigades rained down on him
And swerved to strike his shoulder and flew from his hand.

11. He fell, shaking the Throne with his moan
And stirring grief in the Messiah and Ahmed.

12. The birds gathered over him, thinking
The hands of fate had brought him down, as if it were destined.

13. By night their claws ripped his flesh
As he lay calling, "Is there any helper?"

14. "Where are the horsemen to defend what remains of me?
How did I dry up, and how can I recover?"

15. "Where are the sons, and how has their mother fared?
What has the treacherous aggressor done to her?"

16. "Did she preserve a pure and untouched virtue,
Guarding it for me in days when we were not scattered?"

17. "And have the sons prospered, enjoying
The shade of a life of ease?"

18. Alas, their thoughts have occupied the horsemen
And the flocking of ostriches has taken them far away.

19. I wish I were with them, raiding their dens,
Defending my homeland fiercely.

20. Where are my comrades? I thirst for the fray,
It alone can heal the distress of my heart.

21. Shall I die, or will the sword remain my bedmate
While war, the gale of fate, has not calmed?

22. I fear that fate will end me swiftly
And I will remain grieving in my grave.

23. Visions of battles stir up my longing
Like the desire of one lost for gentle beauty.

24. For one large-eyed and thick-necked as a camel, Khalid,
Or bare-headed in battle, Zayd.

25. And Mu'adh, whose sword the warriors sip
As if they sip the poison of asps.

26. Destiny alternately floats and sinks
In its enormity, in one with surging, foaming seas.

27. Terrifying to Azrael was its plunging into the fray
So he recoiled, gulping with fright.

28. Where are my comrades to rouse me from slumber?
Consolation is exhausted, yet their care never ends.

29. The most remarkable man hailed from the throne,
Unwavering in resolution, not hesitating.

30. Bringing waves of support and uniting strength,
And bringing down pretentiousness bare of arms.

31. He hurls the horrors of calamities with their like
From his resolve until it says to him: Enough!

32. He answered the wounded man, so his sorrows left him,
And he went on to a battle that could not be denied.

33. He gave those people drink who had pledged
To fulfill the right of the new crescent, inevitable.

34. With dew pouring from his spear or bared
For evil, not lagging or falling behind.

35. He plunges into the depths of great trials
Embracing the hopes of highest ideals and guided aright.

36. Cutting the necks of matters, venturing
With the resolve of one hunting noble game.

37. Neither wealth distracted him, nor the words
Of the deceiver, "Cast down your goods and sit."

38. When we stood to say farewell one night,
Hearts jealous of our stance fluttered.

39. Gabriel was the third of us, and Muhammad's gaze
Turned toward us from the meadows of Al-Gharqad.

40. I bade him farewell as if we two
Knelt in devotion in a mosque's courtyard.

41. The secret of God's cloud shaded you
And His favor sufficed you with wishes and joy.

42. When you come to the valiant, greet them for me
With the greeting of an ardent, constant lover.

43. Ask about the martyrs, where are their graves?
When you know, visit them and show devotion.

44. Are they between Al-Hatim and Zamzam
Laid in tombs, or in the meadows of Al-Furqad?

45. I ardently desire, as do the faithful, blood
Spilled by the hands of tyrants rejecting truth.

46. Longing hearts of feelings—is there none among the people
To sigh for them or guide them?

47. Longing for the frozen-hearted! Between their shoulders
Lie dead hearts propped up by the frozen.

48. O festival, you have stirred up sorrow for the tortured,
Restless in bed from worries, laid low.

49. You came crawling with brigades, diving
Among the boats and the intended canal.

50. With lightning you sanction all prohibitions
And send flying or plummeting all who stand firm.

51. The bombers rain down death, terrible red,
Flowing between the adjusted and the aimed.

52. They fire and decimate thousands intentionally
Then remain kneeling as if they have never reaped.

53. O festival, what desolation you roused and anguish
For our eyes, hearts, and inner selves!

54. You opposed us, so we were deprived of your affection.
When you return, reconcile us and renew affection!

55. Praise be to God, the Bestower on those
Who spend their wealth in God, no little or squandered.

56. Their palms remain spreading goodness
Of silver and clouds of curled, black hair.

57. The Supported one called: “Aid the wounded of the fray!
For they are like the intensely thirsty kept back."

58. They contest the greatness of glory and the utmost
Who can claim it grows by it and is darkened.

59. But man, if not roused to some momentous
Horror that reveals its enormity, is not praised.

60. Woe to you, people of Egypt! That was a disregard
From one seeking refuge in your help.

61. Be generous like the Best of Benefactors.
Truly, the successful is led by the successful.

62. You raised the minaret of generosity high among you
So the noble hurry to its loftiness and are guided.

63. That is eternal, renowned gallantry
While favor is despised if it does not endure.
