1. The camp grew still and the resting place calmed,
Yet the pained, crying out, refused tranquility.

2. Truth has a wounded side, pierced with sorrows,
While injustice clamors and the heart trembles in fear.

3. O Sa'd, your sermon to every monotheist
Is a sermon time brings and then takes away.

4. The arrow, wherever you see it, has no regrets over its pains,
Nor can it be removed once shot.

5. You are not where the master of his people would be,
Where are the newborns and the vast expanse?

6. For you, a tent in a mosque was made
For the coarse crowds, erected and raised.

7. Rather, the position of the chosen you reached
So hopes were fulfilled and desires from you made correct.

8. The Messenger inclined to you, hating to see
Your resting place tossed aside, causing sadness.

9. The neighbor of the Messenger, and you were not afflicted by any envier,
For bounty and contentment in you fully rest.

10. "Make the praised hero known by his name to be from me
At a ridge I see him and hear him," he said.

11. "I will give him what I wish, fulfill his right,
And see what God has decreed—what will it accomplish?"

12. It suffices the warrior to be in my mosque,
For that reason the inviolable sacred became a refuge.

13. O Son of Qais, God is your adversary,
He is an arrow that hit the most devout.

14. I did not miss you from the heat of Hell and its burning,
In it, kindled and cast aside, you are called.

15. For whom is this pouring blood whose raging remains
Filling the hearing, steadily streaming, not ceasing?

16. Do you not see, O Bani Ghifar, that it
Flows and springs forth from your encampment?

17. What of Sa'd, O Rufaydah, tell me,
For hearts seek news from the south.

18. Oh what loss! His wound still bleeds blood
After healing, and his soul is torn apart.

19. His time of death came and the decree was carried out,
For every soul has its day and its ruin.

20. The mourners clamored, shaking Yathrib and its family,
And passions in Mecca were stirred by their grieving.

21. A pillar of Islam fell; its builder did not remain.
That important, revered one did perish.

22. An affliction struck the Muslims, so they are shocked
Unable to awaken, sorrowing and crying.

23. Patience, O Messenger of God, if severity fell,
You are the most steadfast of ribs.

24. You are the teacher, no path of guidance
Except is enacted by your hands and laid down.

25. You walk the ideal path and all follow,
You come with the excellent and all obey.

26. Pray over the martyr and go about him
In the shade of your Lord, the angels humbled.

27. They walk around his bier, countless as pebbles,
So the earth has no place for your foot.

28. You walk on tiptoes, cautious,
Though you could be thus and not hurt a toe.

29. The Throne trembles, celebrating,
As God smiles and the heavens roar.

30. O you who rose up with the faith, bearing its load,
While malice stumbles and the foremost trip.

31. Congratulations on robes that carry their beauty,
Light upon light, illuminating and radiating.

32. This is your station—no gifts are diminished
From God, and no rewards are lost.

33. For you is a day at Badr before your Lord, a scene
It is for guidance and truth, a joyous celebration.

34. The Prophet was victorious over his enemies through it
While the atmosphere darkened and death gleamed.

35. The words of a believer split the forces
That Quraish claimed could not be split.

36. It roused every trained Ansari
To wake the fighters while the archers slept.

37. O Sa'd, the one who dwells in the canopy did not forget
To protect the savior of mankind and forbid.

38. When the troops advanced, you came to encircle him
And repel the polytheists from him, deterring them.

39. Among a group of those near to you, you called them
So valor flowed and zeal raced.

40. You stood in rows like the mountains, bound
By a leader against terrors, unshaken.

41. And you pelted Bani Quraidhah with arrows
That the respondent heard, terrified and trembling.

42. Love through it the call to you that did not end
Until its hoped-for good reached you.

43. God eased your chest’s anguish, He indeed
Relieves the chests of believers and eases them.

44. If they walk with you in procession, do not find me among them,
For the matter is my matter and the statement their own.

45. Eternity is populated with your memory, bewildered,
In its expanse there is no neglected place.
