1. I remembered, and memory stirs the youth,
And the grieving soul needs to remember.

2. My regrets, when al-Munzir ibn Muharriq warned me,
Today I see their land empty and barren.

3. The time of union between her and I had passed,
And my passion, that was once so strong, did not diminish.

4. Seeing her neighbor brings me solace,
When seeing her became impossible.

5. I direct my love to her neighbors,
Though they are not my tribe or people.

6. I cast off the garment of humility when I met her,
Though my cloak had been dignity and arrogance.

7. For a time, every white-faced night
We would raid the leprous and asses.

8. Until we met the living Bakr ibn Wa’il,
Eighty thousand armored and mailed.

9. When we engaged each other violently,
Their spears refused to break.

10. We gave them a cup, and they gave us one like it,
But they were more patient for death.

11. When a man does not seek sufficient livelihood,
He complains of poverty or blames his friend excessively.

12. Ignorance without a forbearing wise soul
To steer the matter rightly is no good.

13. I stand for piety and am content with its action,
And I am further from the feared Fire.

14. When the wild beasts bite each other in their lairs,
Burning embers that once were flames are expelled.

15. Like dogs and foxes, we have not ceased since those who sour us
Soured, the people of impurity and Khaibar.

16. The smooth-necked camel bends his neck as if
Covered, stooped with sorrow, unless he is set loose.

17. When a man gifts you a poem,
Like one offering dates to the land of Khaibar.

18. Who can fail to avenge the honor of his people?
I, by the Lord of the dancing girls, will have vengeance!

19. I offered a seasoned she-camel whose ribs
Were like the rough-threaded spears made in Maasikhya.

20. With my soul and family, a Suleimite group
Preparing for war, making armor ring.

21. And they said to us, “Revive for us those you killed!
You have come with something abhorrent.”

22. We do not restore the soul to a dead body,
It was our custom to shed the soul of him who opposed us.

23. We kill but do not bring to life, such is our way,
When the valiant hero is bent on death.

24. We ruled but did not unveil a free woman’s veil,
We seized nothing but the mailed veil.

25. Had we wanted otherwise, their honors
Would be sold and bought among us.

26. But we were raised to high moral accounts
And righteous fathers, and so we scorned the despicable.
