1. Death drew near me, oh Abu Ja'far
Beauty faded and sight wandered

2. Tomorrow I shall bid farewell, farewell of parting, farewell of life
And cross the isthmus of this life

3. And every fatigue has a resting place
For you, my heart’s fire raged

4. And you ignited when it caught flame
I would call “fire, fire!”

5. And I called “oh fire, burn hotter!”
You would not be kind like a lover

6. Nor gentle like a beloved companion
I suffered in love what sufferers in passion tasted

7. Whoever has sampled what I have from mankind
I disgraced my dear self and surrendered myself to you

8. Just to please you, do not remember
I opposed my family and made enemies of them

9. When the estrangement was already known
I protected myself from your intent and aloofness

10. But intense precaution did not avail me
And here you are, you built and alas

11. You left me to other regrets
Nothing remains of you but memories

12. And nothing remains of you for me but images
And ceaselessly complaining of the pain of separation

13. I will squeeze tears from your eyelids
And I will throw myself upon your arms

14. Gently, lest the waist break
Tickling the nipples, oh for love

15. Oh what times have passed and gone
And here I am on death’s mattress

16. Hearing the whispers of her who is departing
I marvel that my heart upholds its pacts

17. And fulfills its vows to one who betrayed
Oh heart, if only when you clung to him

18. Destiny’s hands had slain you
You led me to the path of annihilation

19. And he who guided him stumbled blindly
Why this humiliation, oh mistress of pride?

20. Humiliating the soul is one of the greatest
Soon you will be done, so what care you

21. For the one who has abandoned you?
Forget him, let not arrogance make him gloat

22. Or a heart like stone rejoice
I die while others love my beloved

23. For this, death to me is a matter
Does it become easy for one who loves

24. To forget? By God a hidden blaze burns
I wish you were between my hands

25. That I may press you firmly to my chest
And coil around you like snakes

26. And watch my poison spread through you
And death would gather us, lifeless, on the bed

27. Oh how often beds gathered us in life
And you would spend your grief over me

28. But did not attain me, save barely
But why, just stay, oh Ibrahim

29. And take others in love after me, and go
I will endure the rest of this life

30. And which lover endures as I do?
But come, stand over my head

31. And kiss the lovely, tender eyes
And wet the roses of my cheek

32. With your pouring, surging tears
I die Abu Ja'far, so farewell
