1. Your eyes are two universes wherein
The paths and types cannot be counted

2. Whenever I take a step in them, a pearl
Is opened for me and paths revealed

3. Whenever I grow weary of passion I find
In a heart loyal to it, intimacy

4. Can fate and fortune not be ascertained
In eyes like these? Cease your blame!

5. My soul answers my doubts and suspicion
I'm but a lifetime set free, described like

6. All sorrows are described, nothing more
My life knows no day of adversity

7. And one who covets what you have granted me
May accost me, though for it an outcast he'd be

8. Has not my abode reached them, yet they claim
That I'm the stranger? I who the sky once called home!

9. I who was certain that its deliverance was near
No friend has mounted his steed nor any kin

10. Save one who tended goats and for it was blamed
Nay, they negotiated with me that I should

11. Remain dead so the coward could feel safe
How can I settle when hearts desire only unrest?

12. I've no power that power should fear me
I've no glories of old on which to rely

13. Should ambition sound its drums
My affair is their sword, and so I become

14. Money, though which riches are sought
My affair is their voice, and so I become

15. Silence, behind which cries settle
My affair is their name, so I become

16. Pages in which falsehood takes refuge
I'm protected by a wolf's tail that

17. Shields prey like the winds guard dust
My affair is their bread, so like grain I become

18. For the mill, and they are the grains
Your eyes have seen no dispute, no wars arise

19. Heard no cannon's roar, which would tear open chests
Still know not how a foe can become

20. A friend, when time makes hatred cease
Or how martyrs in their graves keep guard

21. Or brothers split into factions, each
Grasping what he has, assuming he's right

22. One shouts, one retorts, no doubt between them
One is water, one oil, and oil dissolves not in water

23. But their water is life, their oil, if they had sought
A cure, would heal. They know not corrupters, nor

24. Sins after which repentance is too late
If I vent my rage for an hour, sorrow awakens

25. It's the calling of falsehood. Truth does not disappear
It fears the claws of blame will wound it

26. And fears she I pained will not forgive
Only to your eyes do I return despite adversity

27. I'll not be content with any substitute
However long the sunset is delayed

28. Your eyes will not end up a ruin
Abandoned by night and worries

29. Whenever I weary, you are there for me
And for both of us passion has the answer:

30. Two eyes make up for a land
But for Palestine they make up not

31. As for you, ignite longing with
Your arrows, set our souls on fire

32. Until the eye overflows with ardor
And from it tears pour like floods

33. So the eye reveals its faith, dispelling
All doubts, misgivings and suspicion

34. The archer hits his mark, his aim does not fail
The eye's tears flow pure, uncorrupted

35. Poetry has slipped from your hands
Its nature being pliant hearts

36. So it bounces off your breast
And sorrow flows from your weeping

37. No prayer or flight can save you from the torment
Describe with certainty what visions have shown you

38. Reveal through your verse what the hidden has taught
I see two crescents above a light

39. Beneath which there stands a cross
I see a brilliance emanating from it

40. Jesus, the Beloved are there now
I see peace upon mountains

41. Their slopes and valleys welcoming
As if sustenance guards the land

42. From the hungry whose strength is war
I see youth whose age is time

43. Unbroken by grey in his hair
It's grey that breaks he whose life

44. Blackens under the feet of sorrows
I see birds' nests, in which

45. A falcon and a nightingale sleep
As if this eye never read

46. The tale told by Job
It may have read only to recount

47. What the Beloved said is rational
That she's not one of those

48. Whom the Reckoner will charge with sin
A flock of sheep at pasture

49. As plentiful as bounty freely flows
I see my ancestors - how they said:

50. "He who dies will not return"
A child under a tree

51. As the grandfather rains sticks upon him
Is this you, O Palestine?

52. Or do I see what the drunkard sees?
Were you like this in days of old?

53. Woe to what sunset does!
