1. I was created without a purpose
Denied of this world and left in obscurity

2. I see the conditions of it in every aspect
When someone desired it, they wasted their life in vain

3. And I hear its voice that the oppressor
And the singing of the victorious have returned so I was confused

4. So I have come to discern the sweetness in it
From the bitter though I have not tasted anything

5. So I wished in my heart over everything in it
Of hardship and said:

6. If only I was created like the humans
And clothed with a body of clay

7. But I was left without an aim
So I was not burdened or even ordered

8. To be saved from Hell if I obeyed
And to face it in disgrace if I disobeyed

9. I did not choose or was given a choice in what
I am in and I was never asked

10. And when I was asked about it I said an evil
In all that my house shakes

11. Its splendor wanes if water spills
And it warps if oil spills on it

12. One with commotion survives today in it
And one who trusted in silence perishes

13. And when I was asked again I answered:
Gardens in which justice has died

14. Its fruits are far from every vile person
And the one fascinated by it has withered

15. Seeking through isolation from it how much I have lost
And how much I grieved in my isolation

16. I did not inherit the idols of Thamud
Nor did I worship a star or see one

17. A prophet calls me to God
Accepts me and forgives me if I repent

18. Something sweet flows through the folds of the soul
Far from the bitterness of blasphemy I have known

19. Did the soul secretly enjoy something sweet after something sweet?!
For I have not tasted the spirit of sweetness

20. Did the Nile once say that it was the son
Of the Euphrates? No, it is the son of salt I have not drunk

21. I was not given worldly knowledge
With which I could inhabit a world I did not live in

22. So I know Him through deeds with deeds
And worship Him in an unseverable connection

23. And I was not given a lifetime whose limit is death
No matter how long or brief as fortune willed

24. So I heed prohibition as virtue and race
To where death leads if my time is wasted

25. I did not weigh the sky when I won
Nor did I want to cry when defeated

26. I did not long for a beloved past
Nor prepare for a tomorrow and slept

27. I did not maintain kinship ties
For I had no father or mother I was provided

28. Nor was I distinguished from people by deeds
Or described by attributes that defined me

29. Did You create me without sin, my God,
So I have no forgiveness I attained?

30. Did You create me without bowing in prayer
Through which I raise my head if asked?

31. So grant me, O Lord, a body
That I may sin then repent if I know
