1. When life departs, leaving you
An age with no heartbeats,

2. And your own soul eulogizes you, since
You are no longer alive, but among the dead,

3. Do not blame it then, and do not reproach it
If you wish, and know that it is among the faithful,

4. Blame a lifetime that never strove
For it or for those beyond death,

5. For in some lifetimes there is arrogance and vanity
That looks down on the loved ones of life.

6. Its assumption of life is that life
Is subordinate to days and years.

7. It sees in life a shadow that lingers until
It melts away into the darkness,

8. And it walks according to its desires, shortening
Its steps whether hurried or not.

9. It sleeps until when it awakens
It cries out like one lost in the desert:

10. Where is my soul that bore my name, form,
Qualities, habits and traits?

11. Where has it gone from me? Without it
I am but a dream, nothing but nights.

12. A stranger walking the earth like a specter
Who sees, if he sees, only the dead,

13. And a burden on the palms of time
That brings nothing but tribulations,

14. Ignorant of joy just as he is ignorant of grief,
With no desires within him,

15. Hungry only when worms
Hunger, leaving of him only scraps,

16. Without opinion or heart, passing
Blindly through the void without purpose,

17. Awaiting death unaware that his death
Lacks the sweetness of deaths,

18. Unknowing how he died or where
Even the ushers of death eulogized him,

19. No prayer over a disgraced life,
But over an age that cursed with calls,

20. And over one who, when death came to an age,
Stood in ignorance calling for salvation.
