1. I am content with what I have to endure from it
O fate, events without measure

2. It has burdened me with excess, and every one bearing a burden
Would be pleased if the one who brings hardship were gentle

3. And if a man's days become long for him
And he finds humiliating adversity

4. I am one who has found in this time and its people
Like an old building about to collapse

5. Neither is fate my fate, nor are companions my companions
I live with them yet they are not my people

6. I copied my worries and concerns since I revealed
The verses of my weakness with the graying of hair

7. Yearning for the days of youth and its prime
And amusement before the falling out of teeth

8. Who would have sympathy for a stranger who remains
From his soil with vile outcasts

9. O companion of seventy, decrepitude calls you
Seeking to travel to the abode of worms

10. So perhaps prepare provisions for the journey
Or if not, then prepare - do not forget

11. You don't know which hour the guide of death
Will come grasping the breaths

12. Wondrous is an old man aware
Of death yet is delighted by sweet sleep

13. My clothes are washed of filth but my
Religion is not washed of filths

14. Ascetic towards people - what asceticism!
When alone I disobey the Lord of mankind

15. Hopes made fools of us until they nullified
Our deeds with the whispers of the sneaky

16. We are heedless and play in the deviations of the world
With delicious foods and beautiful garments

17. For we are like foolish cattle and this world
Is for us like a borrowed meadow

18. We see the flowers of its stars and roses
Their betrayal and our outcome but rubble

19. And death has laid out its traps for all
To hunt us down like a cunning hunter

20. Yet we do not flee death and decrepitude and we have
No power or refuge from the foundations
