1. It is sorrow, till every heart is aflame
No excuse for an eye whose water does not spill

2. It is sadness, beyond consoling afterwards
It is grief, beyond what patience can erase

3. The devastating blow has been struck, with no redress
The days of Fate shall not mend it evermore

4. Not just for Saodus has grief been set aside
But Bedouin and settled folk are in its thrall

5. In the heart of Gemini it has kindled fires
The sun and moon have nearly sunk below

6. After Prince Muhammad, leading light
Joy is gone, and what hope for a successor?

7. Can the days of Fate after his death
Be granted triumph and victory?

8. His is the grave of bounty, praise and glory,
Of excellent endeavor and noble deeds

9. If the ties of affection did not bind me
The noble and free have no lifelong rule

10. Eons will weep for you, O son of Rabī‘ah
Without you there is no gracious life or fate

11. Eons will weep, the deputations and the lands
When the dewy night is chilled by drops of rain

12. The hilltops will weep for you on high
The steeds will weep, the does and young gazelles

13. The dark-skinned and fair-skinned will weep in battle
The fearless warriors will weep in their mountain hold

14. The uncles, noble elders will weep for you
Whose fare is sour milk and whose sport is war

15. The assemblies will weep this day in sorrow
For your past openhandedness and plenty

16. After you the cheeks of lasses have been raked
With nails, and hair torn out abundantly

17. After you, no shame or honor will remain
You were the shield of the bashful gazelle’s eyes

18. They recall how you would forestall every raid
When the expert’s knowledge proves insufficient

19. For you were their defender and chief of the tribe
As if, among the sons of Hārith, their ‘Amr

20. Who now remains to guard and lead Oman
Protect it when unbelief bares its fangs?

21. For its chieftains, grief for you is legitimate
While patience over you is difficult as stone

22. I console you, O House of the Renowned
He whose name graces verse and prose like jewels

23. For you are the noble, and noble stock when tried
Is like stars glittering in the firmament

24. Each of you is a continuation of his line
His praise keeps him alive in your memory

25. Far be it! No man dies whose works survive him
Be they less or more, enduring as rain showers

26. He was only one among a fellowship
The least being too proud to bear reproach

27. If our lord ‘Alī and Ḥumayr should live on
The direst situation with them is smoothed

28. O ‘Umayr! Show fortitude and mourn fittingly
For the departed whose pride you remain

29. You are mountains above mountains in rank
Immutable, and on the scales the heaviest seas

30. Blessings on the reign of Amir Khalifah
Scion of rulers renowned, intrepid, resolute!

31. As long as Noah the Prophet, the ‘Umayri state shall endure
Commanding and forbidding with sovereign might

32. Ruling their inheritance, succeeding their father
No plain of theirs is empty, no quarter a wasteland

33. All of you serve in his place, and he was a father to you
To you he is a year, to him your years are months

34. The tomb of the excellent Amir Muhammad
Has been watered, and graves around it gush copiously

35. Pouring down as if, when watered, only his fingers
Numbering ten, gave drink though he is buried

36. The Gentle One has blessed his tomb with graces
To spare him alarm when the Trumpet is blown

37. Perpetual prayers and peace upon Muhammad
Singled out for it, the Pure Prophet
