1. The righteous die and the afflicted live
Not all who deliberately cast perish

2. Alas, no one gets what he wishes
Nor does every supplicant get his wish

3. How many blamers attained pleasure
Thus, their blaming brought wrath upon them

4. They went away like severed clouds
Then ruinous clouds rewarded them with doom

5. He punished good with good praise
Yet it was only apt retribution

6. The youth of this age grew accustomed
That they are a worry for me and their deeds are my drink

7. So their statements bespoke their disposition
And their actions revealed the taste

8. They blame each generous and loyal one
If only they realized the vice of vices

9. You would think them, amongst the phantoms of men, men
While they are dogs in attributes

10. Wolves, refined in attire
And the worst of wolves is [that] in clothing

11. Slaves of greed – their benevolence, misery
Their praise, curses

12. They attribute dishonor to the honorable ones
And the hems of their garments were never touched by virtue

13. Their wealth lies safeguarded
And their honor gets violated in gatherings

14. They shut their hearing to honorable deeds
And if you invite them to trifles, they will come

15. They wander into the pitfalls of malice
Like flies hovering over the stagnant pond

16. And the people of this age preoccupied me
Far from the dubious, I seek refuge

17. They obeyed the damned Abū Murra
In saying, action and stance

18. So Allah made them forget what
Was stated in the entire Scripture

19. I turn to You, my Creator, penitent
For You do not torment a group when they repent

20. You are my recourse, protecting me from evil
You, my God, are the Best of Guardians
