1. On the vicissitudes of time, I have been stricken with sorrow
My sorrow has weakened me intensely

2. The women of my tribe wept for me before my death
Yet I grew up and my age did not reach its fullness

3. I became an easy victim of misfortune
Whether it was near or far that they plotted against me

4. Various woes have accumulated into one misery for me
With it, I remain wary of what I fear may strike me

5. The days did not leave me even a little bit
Of patience except numbered sorrows upon sorrows

6. Afflictions have become sweet to me because of their enormity
Upon me, so I do not complain of any misfortune

7. My heart has become confused from the blindness of anguish
Like a smooth, round stone from a quarry of sorrow

8. The hopes did not stop the descent of what
I feared of evils and did not avert from me

9. In every instant, I have a season of sorrow for me
With it, I sold my patience for a losing bargain

10. Vain wishes built for me what I do not hope for in terms of survival
And I did not know that death demolishes what you build

11. Whoever accompanies the life has seen its evil doing
With its ups and downs, the matter is reversed

12. Ah, it has adorned for us the daughters of wishes
With beauty and ornaments of safety

13. Whenever it saddened us with a great man
It showed us happiness from the dust which it destroys

14. When one of us dies, our sorrow gathers
And we go to bid him farewell in intense agony

15. Although we bury him in his grave
We forget him, forgetting like the sins we harvest

16. We dispute over his inheritance before his burial
As if, before him, was the place of burial

17. We go and return like frightened livestock
And the hands of death have no chance to reap

18. When death takes the old father among us
We excuse it, and death takes the women and children

19. If the origin of the branch dies, and the branch
and what follows it, then do not expect life from the branch

20. Beware, we rode towards the Gathering (Judgement)
With little hope, complaining on ships

21. And how strange I am with the loss of Ahmed
The young man Qassim, how strange I am

22. If lives differ in remaining
Then the life of the afflicted is in the affliction of the afflicted

23. My soul is attached to his soul
So do not think I will last long in life

24. No learned woman has clarified about him to me
But it is confirmation of knowledge without speculation

25. It decrees, so it did not leave a heart free of sorrow
Nor an eye comforted from crying for the son

26. I have lost the light of my eye for losing him
And my heart from my innermost being, and my hearing from my ear

27. O you of honorable lineage, protected from defects
And O you of religion, innocent of accusations

28. O you pure of body and companionship and feasts
And bright wish, tail and pocket and pleasure

29. You were a stranger, you were among us, and thus
Is the fate of a stranger from his people, except to the shelters

30. You disliked remaining among us, so you intended to travel
And did not accept truce from the camps

31. You left us separating light from darkness
And left behind sorrow heavier than soft fine sand

32. And you left a memory, sweeter than musk
Diffusing for the length of days, age to age

33. Your two garments were white, both
Pure from filth, chaste from vices

34. Your home was none other than the home of the Son of Mary
What a difference in clothing, food and circumcision

35. Your provision was from an abundance that did not say
During hardship of spending, "Enough," give me more

36. Your water flowed from the flooding of the sky
Although the land made the water metallic in color

37. It is asceticism until Hell feared
It was not created for others from mankind and jinn

38. You killed the daytime of life night
And revived the dead of night, reddening the eyelids

39. Whenever you asked for rain or supplicated
Your supplication did not divert from what you intended

40. When God wanted wrath upon the people
He took you from them without exception

41. So O death which the maidens of Heaven receive
Counter it with goodness, your life and beauty

42. The angels precede it congratulating you on the approval
So honor it here, and blessed is the one congratulated

43. You died and it was a prophetic death
Which saw union with the one whose death you wished

44. I say to those who carried his bier with difficulty
Although they loved him, they did not save him from jostling

45. O you who carried his planks, over them
Is a heavenly secret, so beware of meteorites

46. O you who washed him, his Lord's mercy
Suffices him from washing, perfume and shroud

47. O you who buried him in the soil, his grave
Is the abode of bliss, rivulets and fruits

48. I wish you had dug his tomb
With armpits, and the niche surrounding him to embrace me

49. I wish he had been buried in the center of my throat
So I would always cast my eyelids upon him

50. Maybe if I call him from his tomb
He will answer me when I say, "My master, answer me!"

51. "My father, O my brother in God, can you hear
The call of your grieving son, rather your heartbroken slave?"

52. I stood at the corner of your grave supplicating
As if I were at the right corner, at the corner

53. I suffice to have every cloud
Rain upon your grave, quenching my tears' drought

54. Who can prevent the clouds from pouring down
Upon you, for from it sorrow has split from sorrow

55. We cried, so the thunder was part of our wailing
And part of my tears, and the sorrow on the night of the new moon

56. If I die, death will be sweet from his cup
Maybe we will meet on Judgement Day pleased

57. If I live, no elegy will be composed for the house
Of poetry on its celebration except I have leaned on it

58. For I have loved the dead over the living
Because of their descent to them with plates of meat and milk

59. Just as I hated the living over them, so I fled
The sociable one to live in the neighborhood of jinn

60. Whoever is tested by his sorrow and devastated by fate
So minds do not escape from being tempted

61. I say to him, O you whose burial place is dear
To me, with my sincerity and love for you, increase me

62. Your status wears out whoever attains the like of it
And I have no claim upon you today, O Ahmed, it is thought

63. You have settled in a house - may God expand its narrowness
Upon you - and you left me behind in prison after you

64. I call upon you in grief and supplicate to you in hope
Ask God that I meet you in my Paradise of Eden
