1. I bid farewell to those I cannot bid farewell to,
And I gather from those I do not want to gather from.

2. How many a loving friend worried for his friend,
Whom the crow of separation cawed for.

3. And how many ears of a lover have I heard,
What he heard does not please him.

4. It is as if my heart was numb to hearing,
And bidding farewell to Layla was like embers stoking it.

5. I entrusted my heart not to show tenderness from yearning,
For love, yet bidding farewell to Layla stirred it.

6. And keeping the secret was better before the farewell,
So it spread with the farewell, with the one who spread it.

7. It is as if I were a merchant bidding Layla farewell,
And he had precious wealth he lost.

8. May Allah reward His servant with the farewell,
A garment and hope to regain it from Layla.

9. When matters narrow, so expand after the strait,
For you from the Generous God is its expansion.

10. So the first thing lost for his approval,
Then He gave him what makes him forget the Nurturer's approval.

11. When you win forgiveness the day of her farewell,
Then the best thing is what you hope to do.

12. And teach me that the servant confiding when he disobeyed,
A loving Master once and lost Him.

13. And that is with success and knowledge preceding,
The servant in what he cannot lift off.

14. How many scholars slip for them the slipper of misery,
And how many ignorant were freed by God their bond.

15. So no preventing what Allah decreed for a person,
For the decrees have crumbled before him refusing them.

16. In You I take refuge and trust,
And whoever takes refuge in You will not fear terror.

17. So kindness to a servant who gathered in You what gathered,
And took refuge in the door of pardon hoping and timing it.

18. When a wrongdoer sought refuge in the side of a benefactor,
And came yet was not rebuked for his past nature.

19. If you do not tie the rope of hope from You with approval,
I deserve you counted its severance from me.

20. So grant Your servant condemned with sin mercy,
That veils in the two abodes what he lost.
