1. Alas, what anguish for the remorseful,
The death of Ali son of Abi al-Qasim

2. Alas, our sorrows and loss of him
And the blame upon the ruler

3. Though we may live out our lives
Inhabiting them, for the destroyer they are built

4. Hopes have carried us into a maelstrom
Beyond the power of the swimmer

5. Our hopes were bound by our deeds
Until we were in the place of the fallen

6. Wandering the world, deluded by its vanities
Like one murdered by the sword

7. We sleep content in false joy
Not knowing the outcome for the sleeper

8. We neglected the compulsory as we should have done
Our compulsion was for the unnecessary

9. We shepherd the meadows of distraction heedlessly
While the fateful moment draws near unseen

10. In oblivion we build up the abode of extinction
Whose demolition on the final day is certain

11. And gather wealth dripping with sin
A madman's hoard seized by the usurper

12. While the destroyer of pleasures spurs us on
With the goad of a piercing, piercing blade

13. If man but knew his worth
He would not wander, a ruled serf of the ruled

14. Our leaders in death or against it are equal
In the share dealt out by the divider

15. Rather each person's lot is their measure
Their provision for the grave, like beasts herded

16. And death has spared no elder, nor
Was it gentle to the young man

17. We dread death and its horrors
Yet pine if absent like a dream

18. No difference if you consider between us
And this constant, dreary confusion

19. For the death of all upon this earth, both
The great and the forgotten, is the death of all

20. Who does not see that piety and restraint vanish
And knowledge from the world-wise fades

21. So too, undoubtedly, his passing
Was the death of Ali son of Abi al-Qasim

22. An unvirtuous wound from which no
Reproach could draw any healing

23. The sun of Oman in the earth, its light
Has set and shines no more for the critic

24. The sea of jurisprudence beyond its shore
In a single cubit, turbid and silent

25. After Ali we found no scholar
To elucidate the implicit meanings

26. And extract what is present from the absent
Take the understood from the understanding

27. Know the verses and their abrogation
And the wisdom of the Prophet's clan, the Hashimites

28. His knowledge, if depicted as an ocean, would not
Be compassed by the efforts of any swimmer

29. With thought he unravels the most complex knot
Split by the hands of the vile

30. Until religion was settled in its foundation
And the oppressed empowered over the oppressor

31. He died, yet revived sciences that
Had dwindled from scholar to scholar

32. Some he outlined in his books
Others with the faithful compiler

33. For Ali ibn Abi al-Qasim
Scholarship weeps with overflowing tears

34. And books and pens mourn the loss
Of a sea, turbulent and bitter

35. If earth should conceal his complexion
His memory remains unconcealed

36. His virtues broadcast among citizens
Of homelands near and distant

37. His asceticism has preserved his life
Like rain on smiling meadows

38. And righteous, pure Zakiyya and his sons
The steadfast fighter who remains

39. They did not die though successors to him
The bulwark of religion, replaced the missing

40. They are the pinnacle of creation, no human
Since Adam until mankind's thread is cut

41. The season never neglects to remember him
With praise, no blame, no fault

42. The sky rains generosity on Ali's tomb
Every downpour and heavy fall

43. And God's mercy casts shade over it
In his shrine and on the momentous day

44. The paradise of Firdaws is his dwelling
Neighbors to the Hashimite Prophet

45. May Allah bless him, Lord of all people
As long as the soft winds blow
