1. O Lord, a confined call for help,
A stranger in a narrow land,

2. My mornings and evenings sorrowful,
As if I were rubbed with Hanafeeq,

3. So I was dear to a people, among a people
Who wronged me, more disgraced than a flute,

4. And souls have their worth,
And all wares are taken to market,

5. So neither crown adorns the head of a monkey,
Nor musk on a filthy donkey,

6. I have tested a land of men,
The wicked people of clapping and whistling,

7. They have for every caller a shriek,
When gathered as donkeys driven,

8. If a guitar is strummed for them, their women
Respond with the race of loud brays

9. They are burdensome, poor, heavyweight foreign women
With slender waistlines,

10. And the most generous of them to a guest
Are their women, so welcoming of ardor,

11. So were it not for your love, O my God,
And the love of your honest Prophet,

12. I would not have crossed, riding my camel,
Neither Lehdha and then Barbary in my journey,

13. Nor Marwana and their loving people,
And the hot sands of the filthy land,

14. Nor would I have passed Wadi and its two valleys,
And Jarata and the valleys and palms,

15. And reached Hadheen and Umm Dhuba’a,
And at Umm Al-Ayals I reined in my she-camel,

16. Villages, that if they were Paradise
And were irrigated from its pure wine,

17. My ears would not have listened to evil of them,
Nor my eyes looked upon them all my life,

18. Villages that are deprived of all good,
And of high sand dunes or low,

19. And none in them, when you visit, a friend,
Miserable is the land without a friend,

20. And in them is no flavor for a guest
Except salty herbs stuck in the throat,

21. And among their men there is fighting
In the evening and at dawn,

22. From hunger that makes them
Thinner than an worn-out cloak or racing camel,

23. They are scrawny skin on bones
On emaciated bones and thin,

24. And worse in nature than snakes,
And more defiant than an evil gloomy night,

25. Sons of Iblis in their creation and nature,
Obstacles to every right,

26. They have neglected the duties so no prayer,
Nor Hajj to the Ancient House,

27. Nor fast, nor respected bonds of
Marriage, nor understood freeing of slaves,

28. They neglected prayer and every duty,
They are people of frivolity and debauchery,

29. Sex with menstruating women allowed,
So their blood as mixed as mixed creatures,

30. People's money is halal to them,
And shedding blood like pouring water,

31. They have no pride in life
Except drums or killing a friend,

32. And cleaner than them are dogs and pigs
In profaning mothers and whistling,

33. When they speak to you in any assembly,
Like the babbling of foreigners in dim talk,

34. The ugliest thing about them and from them
Is feeding a guest or giving fodder,

35. None of them can ever be generous
Except a robber, thief, or trafficker,

36. The best and most refined of them in nature,
When you meet him is like a predatory wolf,

37. Disobedient from disobedient from disobedient,
The nature of the branch is the nature of the roots,

38. O Lord save me and my companions,
From the hyenas, so hard of hearing,

39. And facilitate the journey and every hardship,
Make it easy with safe travel,

40. And guard us with Your eye, O Protector,
From enemies and obstructing worries,

41. And of Your bounty, open for us a door of sustenance,
Generously, and widen every strait,

42. And bring us close to the fragrant tomb,
And bring the Noble Sanctuary near to us,

43. That we may kiss the earth of the Chosen One lovingly,
And hold tight to the rope of the covenant,

44. So blessed is he who threw away his staff,
At the door of the tender Muhammad,

45. Muhammad master of all worlds, my patron
Of my two parties, intercessor of the two weighty,

46. The seal of messengers, the first of them
To every virtue without precedent competed,

47. Of ample gifts in life and thereafter,
Unconstrained in abundant generosity,

48. In the Torah and Bible his proofs arose,
And in the True Remembrance,

49. Without him no messenger would have been sent
Clarifying the argument among a people,

50. Messenger of God, we have come beseeching you,
With hopes of attainment from you we desire,

51. And if they were withered before this,
Save us with your friendly lightning until

52. We pasture on the land of lightning bolts,
Love has wasting away from afar,

53. So your way is with ardent lover consumed,
And I am among your beloved ones, O Messenger,

54. I came to you in difficult circumstance,
I crossed to you so many deadly places,

55. And so many a sea and deep ravine,
And so many a wasteland and reddish land

56. And thickets I traversed after thickets,
Sometimes on ships and sometimes barefoot

57. On a foot and leg,
Traveling at dawn when night’s

58. Star rises which I embark toward,
And the days of time have chewed my flesh,

59. And I faced hardship above and below me,
So doom to whoever it threw in them,

60. Is dearer to me than ostrich eggs,
And none is greater than you to complain to,

61. Or gentler to a dear friend than a dear friend,
So be, O best of Creators, my intercessor,

62. And take my hand from the serious aim,
Upon you the prayer of your Lord as long as

63. Turtledoves coo on the tender branch,
And may it perpetually bless your two companions,

64. The first two caliphs, the choicest of the chosen,
And your family altogether, and their followers

65. With goodness, upon the straight path.
