1. I braved the chill at dawn with my thin cloak
Yet strayed from righteous deeds, though my skin froze

2. Had I been of noble stock, fate would have led
Me to all that pleases my Creator and Lord

3. Had I been blessed, I would have vied in guidance
For guidance leads one to the path of fortune

4. I love righteous men, hopeful for
My Lord's pleasure; my fate matches my gloom

5. I hate those hostile to God and his party
Even if my son, father or ancestors be of them

6. Behold, I lived not for God as a debtor
To what is incumbent upon a servant by his Master

7. If it were of myself, I its leader
Even if my neck were by the Indian sword

8. If it were of wealth, I am a Muslim
To please my Lord, frugal and fertile

9. My Lord, You are the just Judge, all-Knowing
Of my state, what I repeat and initiate

10. It matters not what disgraces I divulge to You
As Your knowledge of my essence behind veils

11. Your awe in me is my state entire
Even had I not said, fear of punishment halts me

12. I call on You, hoping You hear my prayer
Oh God, make forgiveness for sin my lot

13. Guide me to the straight path, for I
Seek guidance only through You, my Guide

14. Make not the world the object of my quest
Nor the Hereafter far removed from my eye

15. By Your grace, make delusion and deviation
Fill my heart, sight, slumber and vigil

16. Make my soul accept the Hereafter, for I
Prefer it parted from me like myself

17. I hate the world for love of You; it is
But a rope of evil that saps the soul

18. My Lord, I fear my sins
Most when alone with them, abandoned

19. Without You, who can save me? I am distraught,
Helpless, but hopeful of Your pardon

20. With my profession of Your Oneness, I come
To You with delegates, hopeful of their reward

21. If fortune favor not the youth at first
No effort plants the sapling of his fortune

22. Your knowledge of me supersedes my learning
I am content with threat and promise both

23. The next world is beyond might and means
Without Your guidance, my Lord, and struggle

24. My Lord, forgiveness, clemency and mercy
Through my intercessor, my guide to endless paradise
