1. Alas, who consoles a constant heartache,
With hopes unfulfilled and steps held back,

2. Brimming with sorrow, not free from worries and grief,
Seeing beauty yet unable to partake,

3. Yearning with intense longing held off from water,
A lion true to his pounce,

4. When exhaled his breath lights up his cheeks,
When relaxed, his forehead furls and folds.

5. When the fire of grief in his heart subsides,
The sparks of his sighs flare up again.

6. And if our tears freeze, its thunder and lightning,
Melt them to flow from sadness once more.

7. Thus every day grief assaults me suddenly,
In wakefulness or slumber it leaps at me.

8. By my life, time's daughters have turned my temples white,
Yet in my white hair, I'm no father to girls.

9. Fate's passing days have saddened me,
And every moment brings shock and dispersal.

10. Whenever a sorrow befalls me, I say it will pass,
But sorrows come, filling the horizons.

11. If I seek solace from a departed friend,
I'm left with but memories of him.

12. As if the nights have claimed their due from me,
Ambushing me while awake or napping.

13. Alas! No great bounty descends upon us,
Like the blessings of the Chosen One.

14. Great in sanctity, Al-Murtaza son of Muhammad,
Noble scion, source of blessings.

15. Ally of piety, cave of guidance, seat of resolve,
Generous of hand, sculptor of character.

16. My brother, my confidence, my fortress and refuge,
My sword and shield, my protection.

17. My deliverance. My brother in God, my pillar,
My reserve, the rain on my drought.

18. Trustee of my world, unseen and visible,
My aid against dangers in hard times.

19. As if you were an impenetrable fortress,
In you I confidently climb summits.

20. As if you were the sweet Euphrates,
While I draw and sip from it.

21. You were a sun by whose light
In the chill of dawn, darkness and light are equal.

22. How many a fasting day it has killed,
And a night whose end it has revived!

23. When you faced the prayer niche, your tears
Poured from your eyes like rain.

24. As if the clarity of water were your conscience,
And your honor like musk at gatherings.

25. Your mortal form has gone, and your soul,
And the wish, and the cold, and the vessels.

26. As if remnants of your memory were a garden
Where rain nourishes every plant.

27. I see every free soul only lived
As long as his prayers allowed.

28. The life of the base lasts long, though debased,
While the life of the noble ends on the steps.

29. We saw the noble freeman’s life had no duration
Beyond the time between “hark” and “gone.”

30. Peace be upon you. With your death
My death has advanced toward its promised time.

31. O exemplar of Islam, will you return to us,
Even at the end of times?

32. O chief of worshippers, will you visit us?
Or have you become unable to move?

33. O Kaaba of visitors, do you hear
My laments when I cry in solitude?

34. I would cry tears of blood if it helped me,
And my torrents would drown my enemies.

35. Alas, after you I have become distraught,
My heart melting for those who reviled me.

36. My solace died after you, and my appointed time is up,
And the time for my death is my life.

37. By the sanctity of Taha, Al-Muddathir, Yaseen,
Al-Furqan, and Al-Hujurat,

38. If I saw a grave in which you lie,
I would pray tirelessly at your tomb.

39. Barefoot, not wearing shoes, walking with my eyes,
Lowering my gaze from my private parts.

40. If only you were buried where my eyes could reach you,
To look upon you at dawn and dusk!

41. O sea, the sea has made its waves your grave,
So which Euphrates compares to that Euphrates?

42. Upon you Allah's peace forever,
Raining His bounty without cease.

43. Never shall I stop mourning you,
For that is the extent of my devotion.
