1. The flea's bite has left its mark upon my side
I have no right to retribution or compensation for this plight

2. It gnaws me in the morn, eve and at noon
While we sleep through the night it cruelly feasts

3. I laid out my beddings to evade its sting
But neither quilt nor mattress could protect me from its fangs

4. It has gashed my skin with its sting, never relenting
Leaving a scar like scratched leather or branded sheep

5. Stung by these wretched fleas, it's as if I'm
A chick flung from the fire bereft of nest

6. When fleas creep into my bed, my veins swell
My skin burns from the vicious itching

7. My legs are swollen from the pain of its bites
My hands can barely scratch or touch

8. I dread the rising of stars in the night fearing its bite
As if trapped in a beast's jaws - but no beast is here!

9. I curse it with poisons to kill it dead
And the winds to sweep it away into the dirt

10. I pray to God, the Lord of the Throne, against it and its kind
And all else that may lift and restore my station

11. To return me after exile to my homeland
Stronger against enemies by mere touch than a puff

12. If not for resigning myself to the Creator and loving His Prophet
I would not have left my home walking with this staff

13. Neither my love for Layla nor praising Ahmad
Would make me fear the darkness of night or thirst

14. Though hungry, with a flaming hearth nearby
My soul was not satisfied by rough hay

15. My days and nights - drinking from the well of Zamzam
With each draught rising higher than the last

16. When I return they say "Bathe in Zamzam,
Quench your thirst or seek food if hungry"

17. May the Generous sustain for me its outpouring
With every year, even if I'm carried upon a bier

18. I have no consolation from Layla, though if I
Journeyed to her through the windswept hills

19. My Lord, O God, I pray to You hopeful
To reunite me in love with Layla in an instant

20. And forgive my sins, make me pleased and content
Oh, the bliss of contentment! And contentment I seek!
