1. Best wishes in your grief, for patience in sorrow is the best.
When patience flows like patience in grief,

2. Do not grieve, for the grieving is draped in
A garment of humiliation spread in dread.

3. Entrust the matter to the Creator; relinquish part of yourself for what
You were recompensed, and the reward of death and pain.

4. For no living thing has lasting permanence, even if it remained
For as long as what has just been announced by the transgressors.

5. For the likes of you has not grieved for anyone,
But for you, so do not feel secure from death.

6. And beware an unexpected, overwhelming death,
And beware your standing between awe and dread.

7. For death is a bridge which all must cross,
And the difference is between the ignorant and the devout.

8. Indeed fortunate is he who faces misfortunes in
An army of patience, stout of heart and steadfast.

9. O Ahmed, O unique one of the age, be a mountain
Against misfortunes, firm and unshaken.

10. For your companion has not innovated in parting, nor
Is this separation counted among innovations.

11. Be easy, for this is a free woman who
Has taken up residence near God, impregnable,

12. In a necklace of houris serving her
And angels of the Merciful in assembly,

13. Until she embraces you tomorrow
In a lofty palace of Paradise on high.
