1. Whether I'm angry or content, my beloved
Though my sins be many, sins remain

2. I'm a rose whose beloved branch
Whose breeze above heads makes fragrant

3. The meadow's wildlings circled my robes
Why am I, unlike others, blamed?

4. In love I have a nature disobeying passion
Alternately tending and forsaking

5. Passion won me, to which my side leaned
Yet the staff of youth is stiff

6. If I resist, each limb of mine
Yearns, though I hadn't called, to answer

7. Each morn laughs at the lad
Who loves, whose eyebrows knit and frown

8. My anger for you is among strangers
Nobility to nobility feels ire

9. Whence are you, and whence those you accompanied?
Or is each cousin to you a kinsman?

10. Is it manliness that I divert my eyes
While you make me halt where doubts disappoint?

11. I remain amazed how their words deceived you
And say: if you listen to them, you're lost

12. Not that their words, but that their impact
Wounded the hearts' scrolls with gashes

13. My love for them is firmer than their love for me
If you seek it, it trembles like a withered leaf

14. My right hand drew you; do not betray it
And one sold you, though bounteous and open!

15. You rose after setting, and for enviers
Setting succeeded rising like your fortune's ebb

16. O brother, awake! Our cowardice reproaches
And keepers of the pact we are not true

17. The lion, when stoned by Arabs, is like him
And, like him, Abu Al-Husayn is esteemed

18. They seethed with rage that for their loved ones burned
And if they drank the Euphrates, it was fire

19. They knew not that sword and courage in them were one
And forgot that vengeance was near at hand

20. O brother, leave off praising me! I am
For loftiness, while you are the sought

21. Save your brother from blame, and tell him
The arrow goes astray sometimes, and hits

22. Make not the archer's error his punishment
Since right, as it shines clear, can disappear
