1. After you, I have intense longing and sorrow
Lonely nights and tearful mornings

2. We wanted you to be with us
As a neighbor in the shade of your extended courtyard

3. But you turned away from us, no longer smiling and chatting
And left us, no longer staying in touch

4. So I will mourn you with tears, even if
The tears of one in anguish over you are of no use

And the crescent of good fortune buried in the earth

11. And the one who reached glory before attaining it
Glory came to him with the wreath

12. And the one who did not cease seeking knowledge
Until he was shrouded in the earth with sorrow

13. Away with the visitors of worries for they
Are guests who cut every vein

14. They overwhelm when they overwhelm, they do not bend
Except at the center of each unique knot

15. O you of good fortune, for your departure honey
Has filled the quivers of calamity

16. Sun of fortune, your absence so I do not find
In the shadow of the Forgiving God's pardon

17. The candles extinguished at your absence
And those meadows emptied of grazing cattle

18. My covenant with your Egypt was the Egypt of all beauty
And today Egypt is of sorrow and counting

19. No one remains in it of those whose crescent I knew
Among those I was familiar with except the black nights

20. Their hearts are filled with hatred as if they are
The pots of Jesus that descended with delegations

21. O auspices of the days, or O harshness of loved ones
You have made mute my instrument and voice

22. You have brought me to a place and barred me
Between affection and the agony of loss

23. Still I call out misfortunes patiently
Until I was singled out for them and few are my peers

24. If you send troubles my way, for they
Are like tales told to David

25. Be gentle with me, for my patience is stern
Without it, every iron melts

26. So he who robbed life from satisfaction
Drank a bitter potion with thunders
