1. We wish for loyalty from the people of affection
Yet hearts find in them what displeases them

2. They blamed us for silence, and praise be to God
For the gratitude of the blessing we are in

3. If turning away was a misstep
Then to God belongs the misstep that saved me

4. Or if it was neglect as others claimed
Then with a beloved one I desire neglect

5. Verily the best of speech is that which is concise
And benefits souls with what concerns them

6. A man's stance with people matches
The worth of his words that express it

7. Man is but a word from the mouth of fate
Cast to every listener that conveys it

8. So beware of words that would spew malice
And beware of people that would see you as vile

9. Can there be guidance after hearing yields
To my words if I were to relay delusion?

10. If the ideas poured from me
While I at their guide remained

11. And if man strays from reason’s path
Bewildered and lost he blindly wanders

12. You would see the learned man as ignorant
And see the forbearing man as imprudent

13. Many an ugly one whom the foolish desire
Until it is said she cast her spell

14. There are subtle points which if the speaker
Were to contemplate would bite his fingers

15. Beneath them lies disgrace, blame, and censure
So of what use is one who voices them?

16. You are witness to the innocence of my soul
From insinuations their souls approve
