1. My eyelids were intoxicated by the distraction of youth
My gaze was fixed while my tears flowed

2. Drunk from the wanderings of the morning breeze
Crying out while my eyelids were swollen

3. My tears rained down due to their languor
Or a soul rose up, bellowing within them

4. I hung my well-matched Turkish verse
Its conception took form within me

5. His temples and brow
Are a night born upon a dawn

6. Turn your gaze upon them
For in their beauty black is made white

7. And the full moon shows you therein
A towering, graceful gazelle

8. Inclining gently, and the branch is most beautiful
When it inclines

9. My body would not have wasted away
If only my heart were more resilient

10. And in my imagination are two things
My tears dissipate towards it

11. A rose blooming in the gardens of beauty
Or an arrow flying straight

12. He is a virginal paradise
And my spirit, and sickness is eternalized through him

13. It was as if I had tried to sever
A limb from him, or a mother to sever her son

14. His beauty robbed
Every gazer of her sight through a blinking eye

15. For that his eyelids,
His idol, and his lover rest

16. And the wings are whitened by humility
While the morn is blackened by distance

17. Were it not for him my tears would never
Have flowed, nor my heart been fettered

18. For the night is an appointment to meet him
And the throng renews at dawn

19. The stars appear in the darkness
And the appearance of the star of faith is eternal

20. I am amazed by him who charms hearts
While he is matchless

21. Ministries incline to him
To a burden prepared

22. The spear dances at his side
And the sword has a reddened edge

23. He is the rain-bursting cloud
With a mind set alight

24. That a torrent flows from him and that he stops
In the place of confusion, generous

25. Higher than redundant meanings
And a poetry of repeated couplets

26. By God, what defiant forelocks
And uniter of defiant locks

27. As if the word “question” sings to his hearing
Modulations of chant

28. He remedied the state of the king when
He was led astray by the most corrupt

29. And did to the pens what
The masked and ejected did

30. Or a red the rays stretched
Over his robes, embodied

31. Above every critic of the past
The garrulous upon the laconic

32. As if the wave casts him
Into the tumult of torrents, foaming

33. The breeze plays with what rises above it
Of the ponds, so it curdles

34. I left him as if death
Were observing him from its watchtower

35. So I referred his trial to the sun
Of a bleary eye

36. And folded the stream of his sword
Not with the deaf nor the supple

37. You launched the sails complete
Wealthier than the intended reed

38. It is an assembly in which your claim is for you
And the justice of the sword bears witness

39. And it is the white hand that blames
The mention of its miracles, and I assist

40. And for you are hands like valleys
And talents beyond count

41. The hearings prostrated to you in
Generosity at every scene

42. And we account it a treasure, and how excellent
A treasure for the established king

43. You copied my sufferings’ inscriptions
The gloom of a woeful life

44. You ruled his enemies, and the aim
Of the frontiers is that it be defined

45. So today his intestines do not
Fidget, nor does any spy roam

46. I pointed to eternal time that so-and-so
From it tightened what tightened

47. Until you restored the land altogether
While it is one to the One

48. It flows and passes thanks to
Your loyalty in a paved path

49. I knew you in high places
Disobeying whoever slackened

50. You accustomed me to leaving wishes
And for all people is what they are accustomed to

51. Whenever a brother came to you desiring
Then desire, in what is said, is best

52. Roll up for it the train of care
Traveling to every goal

53. So the result of life is praise
After the speaker has vanished

54. It describes the gazelles while they
Are humbled, long braids trailing

55. Since every verse of your ascendancy
Is a stringed necklace, organized

56. So when a reciter begins and sings
The minds tweet

57. If only it were in the breast of a rock
Or the heart of a frozen clod

58. Good remains, then evil remains not
Neither darkened, nor darkening

59. How many neglected wells and
Abandoned palaces have you reconstructed

60. Remaining in the shadow, passing
A lifetime of unwaning honor

61. The cloak of your glory guides gazes
Blinking and glistening

62. If your merit were first
It would have heated the eye of one made icy

63. If I am envied it is no wonder
The lofty one envies his peer

64. Life is but stages—how can you
Attain excellence to don as a crown?
