1. Who suffered anguish, who felt melancholy,
In an abode whose beloved I wept over.

2. If not for him, I'd not mourn what's mixed up
Nor incline toward the throng, not his eyes.

3. Nor would I tread his dwellings,
Asking his traces about his withdrawal.

4. This is the law of passion—I do not
Wish to evade its duty or tradition.

5. Nor do I complain of time's cruelty or
Blame my tears except for his smoothness.

6. They went away, leaving in its plains
Every stranger crying for his homeland.

7. One who loved yet blamed his love
Reaps fruits of joy from his sadness.

8. He never knew the agony of parting or
The ugliness of love from its beauty.

9. If it camped in the heart's expanse,
It would strike meaning into the body.

10. Do not blame me for wakefulness—keep me
Awake with all you see of his idol.

11. If not for my melting at his soft stature,
No ardent critic moved me to his ways.

12. Nor did I stand weeping at the lichens of Nu'man,
Nor complaining to his branch.

13. He felt no ignorant passion from me,
Rather, he inclined to his kin.

14. Take security from me against his brow’s bow,
A gaze that kills in its temptations!

15. Or no—leave me be, however he wills,
Grief leads the submissive in his path.
