1. What wrong has my imagination done to deserve this distance?
The star has crossed its orbit in vain, without finding guidance.

2. The morning breeze refused my melancholic vigil,
And it is strange for one afflicted to receive a visitor.

3. I did not deny I concealed my woes,
For I saw shame in receiving one accustomed to comfort.

4. If I respond discreetly to questions,
So does an echo answer though unseen.

5. My thirst is slaked by the gathered rain
Of my youth, though my waist complains of leanness.

6. The fragrance of the breeze intoxicated
Its hems which rumpled and its temples which curled.

7. Like a gazelle in glance, and smooth as silk in touch,
With thighs like a staff and swaying in its walk.

8. As if the sparkle of its sharp edge in its sheath
Were my fire, kindled to passion by tears.

9. Girded with a sword, its sheath bears witness
To the blood of lovers shed in a glance.

10. Strange that an unleveled spear can wreak havoc
While the sheathed sword of a glance cuts to the quick!

11. My heart grieves from dusk till dawn,
And the pain of love returns each day as it began.

12. I fear our parting tomorrow will leave
No trace of happiness, only regrets.

13. My tears rushed ahead of their goodbyes,
And cheeks too, for longing had an end.

14. I lost my way in the charms of dawn,
How can I find my path when guidance has deserted me?

15. Stop by the ruins, some dawn, if you wish
To see the blackest of dawns.

16. If my dawn returns as darkest night,
I made the night dawn, everlasting.

17. If that tavern is empty, still
That gazelle guided us long ago.

18. And had I woken from passion's stupor
To the faith of chastity, finding a guide,

19. I would praise the virtue that followed when
God granted us the Judge of Judges, Muhammed.

20. Bestower of bounty, eloquent, revered, generous,
Merciful, glorious, most excellent.

21. Without him praise would be flawed,
The necklace of favors scattered apart.

22. He attained perfection along with good omens,
As a child the locusts hailed him master.

23. God spent his treasure of generosity, so if
You come to him needy, he grants exalted nobility.

24. None more open-handed nor generous than the Lord,
None more lofty, none more distant.

25. When the generous race birthdays,
I come to the vitality of the faith, most excellent birth.

26. I find him most generous, most ambitious,
Most abundant, most noble, unique in refinement.

27. If the torrent was Ghodnofar or the flood Conan,
Or the rain Mihnd, coursing long.

28. The star of glory never abandoned the seeker,
Nay, it marched seeking the meek and helper.

29. He gifted the attainment, assailing and pure,
Thus he rose obscuring mankind, famed and clear.

30. No devoted supplicant lacks his rains
Or stream from his hands of generosity.

31. Not all who ever lived and drank
Quenched thirst, or fortified glory's edifice.

32. He folded the mounts and lids loftily
To the Sublime - most fitting for lovers of heights to slumber.

33. A sword does not deter calamities while
Sheathed, until it is stripped bare.

34. Glory is the opposite of mirage, it flows not
To the deluded, nor veils the eyes.

35. O Son of Perfection, while all of mankind is flawed,
O Son of Clemency, excelling alone.

36. If Jesus revived but one deceased,
O you who revived throngs with dew.

37. If Moses contained one hand white and glorious,
You have its like, glorifying them every hand.

38. By the light of your tidings the destitute gain plenty,
By the light of your wisdom in trials comes guidance.

39. If you sadden the envious by arriving,
How can the sun please the eyes of the blind?

40. So stay where you wish, your course is glory,
Vanquishing enviers, humbling them.

41. No matter how long you're absent from a council of witnesses,
The dawn cannot be confined.

42. You made me indifferent to the ambitious,
And rightfully so, for one who attains your stature.

43. Of all the generous race's claims, I found
Naught but your gift and promise.

44. By your father - no sword encompasses all valor,
Nor does every cloud contain thunderbolts.

45. So let your appointees praise you,
While the lowest estate for a benefactor is praise.

46. You spent your wealth before your love's,
And spent your wealth that he might rest.

47. You opposed fate, wronging it,
Remedying its harms, mending its ruins.

48. No sword blunts each edge it meets,
Nor does every arrow hit its mark.

49. You unified their scattered kingdom,
And reined in their faded glory.

50. You appeared among a people gone astray,
As favor bewildered amongst them wandered fragmented.

51. Your ancestors buried it in its pages,
And for its loss dressed the ink black.

52. When they brandished, their pens slew
Wealth before the crime.

53. If I enumerate, even incompletely, in an abode,
Night has gathered both happiness and solitude.

54. If my words grow long, though precise,
Praiseworthy the lead of the far-striding.

55. Strangely I fall short of an eminent's range,
When I hold the most distant abode.

56. You illuminated the night of woes, O full moon of darkness,
And transcribed: which of the two abodes is more lasting?

57. Thus you perpetuated life through divine bounty
Generously, and slew with clemency the vicious.

58. Forever will your call relieve the destitute,
And your mediation thwart the aggressor.
