1. He began to rain down copious tears
When he passed the valley and saw a fire

2. She danced in her purple shirt
So her tears became like petals scattering

3. She emerged like the cheek of love increasing
In glances, blushes and redness

4. She inspires longing, youthfulness and weakness
And kindles yearning and thoughts

5. We concealed the secret of passion from the spies
Until the secrets shone through

6. And we were ignorant of that love one day
And recognized it when we asked about the homes

7. We did not laugh at closeness until we wept
At the distance, forms and traces

8. And we wished for their elegant days
And those innocent maidens

9. Each dewy mouth, its sweet saliva is wine
We drank it though already drunk

10. She brought out a wrist bound with a palm
I am not pleased that the crescent is her bracelet

11. Saying, she is blameless
Nothing but beauty is the excuse of the virgins

12. Tell those slender ones, "You are branches
So when have buds been fruit?"

13. Their pomegranates are manifest, so if you doubt
Look at the shining faces

14. By my father a rider into my dangerously attained union
Fearing no bold attacker

15. He resembled the full moon in traveling, so for this
You find the night when he visited a mantle

16. He is a second rising and distant
And brother of the gazelle, restless and bounding

17. He exposes branch, dawn, and dew of pearl
Stature, and cheek, and shining

18. With a figure that paused an hour of my patience
And chastity in which I doffed chastity

19. With cheeks down which flow the tears of lovers and beauty
That stops all eyes

20. Whenever my thoughts built up distance from him
The steeds of thought draw nearer to devotion

21. How can I forget the epoch of Damascus and its people
And those homelands and encampments

22. Among whites that make whites turn aside
And browns that confused us, swarthy

23. If sorrow were to weep long
We would weep for those brief nights

24. So may God water that open view
And those places of ritual prayer and dawns

25. Treachery that shames snakes, and gardens
That dazzle the awake, narcissi and blossoms

26. How we lent ears on pulpits of religion,
And praised their love-smitten preachers

27. And looked upon the waters, which were
Like lovers, unable to find rest

28. And the heads of branches for birds like writings
How much sorrow have they brought down

29. They do not ask the clouds nor long
Like the whole earth, blossoming

30. The nights veiled them from us, as the wings
Of darkness veil the day from us

31. So spur on the horses, strutting and prancing
Bodies that ravage the horizons vying

32. And hurl at me whom you will, you will meet
The fearless stead, aloft, towering

33. And gather from me the boldness of my past youth
Roads of travel are sweet for its like, to travel

34. I do not fear misfortunes, and from the King
Al-Nasir I want victory over calamities
