1. A heart that yearns for the abode of love though parted,
And tears of passion doing what must be done.

2. I wept when the beloved left, as per the news,
Inscribed in letters from the pages of separation.

3. Passion, passion! My tears flowed in anguish,
When the beloved left, and the wise one was no more.

4. It does not surprise people, my humiliation and their glory.
The ruling of passion over all its sons is but wonder.

5. It makes my heart swerve from its resolve,
And oppression and injustice have come to wrong my heart.

6. Lightning learned weakness from their abodes,
So it started smiling through my love, and I complained.

7. Our loved ones, we did not seek patience after you,
Nor did we ask, and the clothes of youth are now dry grass.

8. Vain hopes taste sweet to me though they are lies,
And in talking of hopes, lies do nicely.

9. You are gone, so there is no more yearning for your affection,
No more, nor any life for me after you.

10. And absence has darkened, though yearning is clear,
And shooting stars appear in the darkness of nights.

11. You laughed at my tears when I was with you,
Like the laughing of lightning when clouds weep for it.

12. Desires come near you, though despair distances them
From us, and contentment brings to life what anger destroys.

13. Do not hasten with parting before its time,
Fate must reclaim what it grants.

14. Had it not been for the slain, we'd not be veiled from your friendship,
For affection is not something that can be seized by force.

15. You punished us though we had no fault in your abandonment,
Save passion, so from you comes the flight to you.

16. The morning breeze conveyed your greetings,
And languor, while tears flowed in streams.

17. So it brought its breath to the slender, ignorantly,
While I, toward you, spent the night declaring my allegiance.

18. When it whispered about your cheek, they thought
It was the branches and shrubs speaking.

19. A subtle gesture, beautiful, and Gazelles understand it
About you, so it shook their hips in rapture.

20. The water is of silver, and the cup's essence is gem,
And the wine is pure pearls, intimate and dear.

21. The red wine they clung to when the flood raged,
Foolishly thinking it was fire.

22. Peace to a house where you have lodged,
For it has power and glory from you dwelling in it.

23. Every misfortune has cast me there,
By God, it was good to me during its turns.

24. For me are steeds and camels, if I want an abode,
And if I stay, then religion, faith and discipline.
