1. The gazelles of fever and the wild doe of Sel'
Scattered my tears on the day of gathering.

2. Whenever sorrow stirs my heart,
A weeping one consoles it with its branch.

3. O daughters of the boughs, vast is the difference
Between shedding tears over the mounts and poetry.

4. There is no evidence of sickness upon you,
Like my body, nor a witnessing tear.

5. You know not the state of my passion for Sa’diyya,
And the camels between descent and ascent.

6. And my crying for Al Arba‘ Al Hamra’ after
Al Bayd‘, yearning for Al Thalath Al Sufa’.

7. O you who blame me for lamenting the departure,
Upon the settler of passion, so lament!

8. Make another heart stoic, if it be icy,
And boast upon other than my hearing.

9. My patience is tried with Lamiya’s estrangement and distance,
If not for passion, my patience would not be tried.

10. Leave me be, my standing is not upon the abode,
Nor do tears flow with innovations.

11. It is the law of passion and the judge of
Beauty’s religion, calling for adherence to law.

12. So it is not to me the first questioned,
We paused at it, so it was cruel in returning.

13. Nothing but the clouds of drizzle, though generous
Unless secured by my tears.

14. Maybe one night it travelled with shyness,
Though it is a sun, a moon of delightful nights.

15. Murderous is the bow of its eyebrows, when
It aims the arrow of eyelids without pulling.

16. My wonder at its passion though it is unjust,
How it meets with obedience and hearing!

17. It desires avoidance and anger,
And passionate love of meeting and refusal!

18. A biter of its cheek and of the agony of separation within it
Is what is between a sting and a bite.

19. Uncoverers, spear-like fire in the
War of lightning against the spears of candles.

20. Every blonde has a heart for wearing out,
A blazing fire and a body of tears.

21. So it is in every dark one, unruly ones
Like the arrows of goats in every ruggedness.

22. And the call of the line, piercing the plains,
The plains are fluttering with glittering ones.

23. The hilltops are like thirsty terrain,
So they are hot and ardently desirous.

24. As if the blood in the zeal of the heated
Coloured the tail of birds with power.

25. The freed steeds, though they are seas
Vying between vigor and bursting forth.

26. Each flier towards the field of intentions
Means harming it with bereavement.

27. And if time grew arid, it never meets it
Except as a fertile land of spring.

28. Its making for its seekers is beautiful,
Just as snakes are beautiful of making.

29. The iron of passion is the iron of a spearhead
On the day of clamor, iron of hearing.

30. So it is like the Indian swords in nature,
And like pouring rain in sending down.

31. If she knew its generosity like we know,
The waters of lions would boil with rage.

32. Entrust it and war is life and death,
Peacefulness and life for harm and benefit.

33. A king whose religion is generosity, he never
Ceases between a lute string and fingers.

34. It spread the land with its melody so the camels
Are safe from roses of five and a quarter.

35. To it many a free soul challenged,
And many a smooth and supple one yielded.

36. It remained guarding with its eyes the flock of Islam,
And with the sword in battles it guards.

37. So it is in the glint of its whiteness and
Stumbling it struts in a morn and detachment.

38. And far are the steeds, before the collective attack
Meteors between integrity and stains.

39. Do not make people suffer, for submission
Is not in every situation like the spring.

40. Whoever undertook its pursuits in the
Abode of glory undertook upon palaces and climbing.

41. Not the clouds of ostriches are like the flashing
Of soft lightning, severe of falling.

42. Full of dew and the clouds complain
With the camels’ yearning for rainless udders.

43. Effective is the arrow of its expert opinion, not
Swerved by schemes nor coats of mail.

44. A separator, a cutter, and not every sword
Is like the swords of Joseph in bonding and detaching.

45. The kings of the world in distance and nearness
Are a mirage of a plain amidst deceits.

46. Every soul is confused about its scope,
Not tasked beyond its capacity.

47. It carried the wind of its beautiful locality,
Maidens in the wind of cool breezes.

48. No breaker’s heart was pleasured
By speech sweeter than it, nor heard of hearing.

49. He who returned the days though they are slaves,
The nights like modest maidens.

50. Any night that grows dark in abodes,
It is black in necklaces and tassels.

51. It is the highest of my status and surest of my merit,
Where my status is in denial and push.

52. And granted me in every ample robe,
It is the garden from interwoven by creation.

53. It undressed the hearts of enemies
With a throb of beauty and undressing.

54. I broadened them by force and cleavage, and no
Better life than one of force and cleavage.

55. And I flourish, the blacks of misfortunes mourn,
In the whites of deeds, among them my lioness.

56. Like sheltering clouds it follows my shadow,
Its shadow wherever I was in every quarter.

57. Any fertile crisis, though most monstrous,
Misfortunes, so which precipice to cleave!

58. I will clothe it in every finely adorned
Cloak of compassion, smiling of lions.

59. It was made easy in ease, so it is like water,
Feared in flood, hoped for in benefit.

60. A young girl, daughter of a night, shaming the moon
If the son of five and nine grows radiant.

61. It sanctified its house through sublimity so for minds
It is a pilgrimage from every lofty road.

62. Every white one I kissed in my Umarah singly or collectively
In the Muzdalifah of my life’s pilgrimage.

63. So it is to prosody as he is to the children
Of time, so they never tasted the bitterness of anguish.
