1. For that beloved and this closeness
I shed the adornments of passion and yearning

2. So for the beauty tears fell from me
And for separation my skin weakened

3. I stood though it was not the stance
Except for the striving of sorrow and sadness

4. So it wasted my hearing the blame beads
And my eyelids split open the wound's dressings

5. So O carrier of love from my tears
You knew my agony but who with?

6. And I fear suspicions about him while he
Is learned after the suspicions

7. By my soul a passionate dark-eyed beauty
Whose glance did not falter except to captivate

8. And I, by God, am to the ardent lover
An ignorant pagan to that idol

9. I fulfilled a passion and with passion he passed judgement
So my tears flowed and my heart imprisoned

10. And he taught me therein how to blame the departed

11. To God from one enamored with loyalty
As if I am not one of this age’s people

12. And how can a stranger who cried be blamed
For the nearness of old age and the distance of homeland?

13. I yearn and no wonder for the generous man
Remembered a generous past so he yearned

14. And it suffices you that I by the arrow of separation
Am wounded in spirit safe in body

15. So time has from me the blame of malice
And for the son of Husayn the finest praise

16. He is the star not the good name from him taken
No, and not his money hoarded

17. Generous whom the world and turmoil surround
With spreading gifts and covering tribulations

18. I have sat when obstacles stood up
So he brought life to purpose and stopped strife

19. And his action did not separate from concord
And his wisdom did not meet with loss

20. Of lofty pillars, long right hand
Firm of heart, vast of giving

21. If the clouds congeal in place they melt
And if the rain withholds stingily it slides

22. And if courage exceeds forbearance
It bows in humility and if fear decreases determination

23. If only you could see him speaking
Having unleashed in his sermon the sword of tongues

24. And directing the arrows of his pens
And doubling gifts to flow generosity

25. And he came in an army of his thoughts
While the witnesses of insight displayed him

26. That you may know in the kingdom how singing is
And learn in nobility how favors are

27. And see from his palm and banner
Papers pleading in rows

28. So O you who gladdened me by special closeness
And O you who saddened me by intended separation

29. I circulated your book when I examined
So it portrayed for me repentance in paradise

30. And wonders of his writing stood up
In prose of bliss and poetry of sighs

31. So his prose is more eloquent than our poetry
And his understanding weightier than what we composed

32. For his friendships are like imprinted amulets
And his letters like Yemeni onyx

33. While his meems mock the gaps in teeth
And those eyes by the beauty of eyes

34. And his hands pick the fruits of dew
And whiten in it the faces of favors

35. To quake the limbs of slender waisted dark-eyed beauties
And shame the faces of the fair cheeked Yemeni women

36. As if I clung to the train of clouds
Yes, and lodged in the corner of an embrace

37. So whatever river in the lowlands you wished for
And whatever flower in the gardens you wanted

38. With them let the envious waste me
I have clarified the motes and washed the pearls

39. For glory when not paired with nobility
Is nothing but like some of the crafts

40. And how many ignorant crude ones in the desert
Thinking that they have insight

41. If people rise early for generous deeds
He selects his clothes and perfumes himself

42. Oh if only while deluded with that
He had bought his honor with the cheapest price

43. And my anger is not enjoyment of bliss
Rather it is anger for loss

44. I was ignorant so the face of rebuke darkened
For the oppression of intimacy and anxiety like a homestead

45. I joke with the affectations of dew
And each his supererogatory and required acts

46. While my feet have stumbled the vines
So they did not tread a path like this path

47. So O you who seeks from others, no! You will only find
Favors lying like the favors

48. If you sense a flash of Yusuf’s light
You will hit the mark and discard this arrow

49. Alone in his likeness he has not been
And my loyalty to him that he will have no equal
